Can I start off by saying live baiting is good but I am very funny about it the fish has to come from the water your fishing as this can spread disease and Roach are the no one culprit from spreading disease.
will did out some rigs and post them up but woody and Noodle are your men for this

i always have the uptrace on it as with live baits you can get bitten off

deadliest method is a roving livebait.. http://www.hooklinks.co.uk/pike/navigation2/pikeframe.html look at the rigs & it'll show you a free roving rig...don't get many big hogs on this method, but plenty of fish.

ok lads be very carefull here
ornamental goldfish and other coloured aquarium species from garden centres and pet shops for use as live bait face prosecution and fines of up to £2,500 by violating fishery bylaws that outlaw movements of all live fish to angling venues without the appropriate Environment Agency licence.

Can I start off by saying live baiting is good but I am very funny about it the fish has to come from the water your fishing as this can spread disease and Roach are the no one culprit from spreading disease.
will did out some rigs and post them up but woody and Noodle are your men for this
only just seen this sorry
for live baiting as simple as it gets is free roaming with a single hook use something substantil hook wise like a 2-1/0 and think along the lines of super specialist's aberdeens etc my choice fo the majority of this is the cox and rawle uptide hook
make sure your float is large enough for the bait AND weight and that your line floats lip balm or vaseline will do
on your trace (make it long for this 20-22 inches is ok) set the weight about 1/3 of the way up the trace from the bait ssg's are good for this if you dont want to spend money on the overpriced fox weights
paternostered baits come in two main varieties with lote of variations on the themes
standard float pat comprises of a float (use a dumpy inline sea float or spend some money on sunk floats tbh the poly balls from model shops work with a tube through em well enough) then tie on an uptrace 18 inch longor so then off this you have your hook trace i favour short ones of 6 inches or less an fished helicopter style (least tangly of em all bar one system which uses one trace all the way through, and the bomb link tied to the up treble on the trace but his restricts the movement a bit too much for my liking) then off the bottom of the uptrace run your lead link which needs to be lighter than your mainline and tie a rough granny knot just above the lead, this knot will help the lead break free and give you a near as dammit identical presentation when retied for a couple of break offs.
then there is the cd or colin dyson rig which looks odd when you see it a t 1st as the float is below the bait when its veiwed from the rod tip end and rather than trying to explain this google it and look, it is usefull to hold fish against drop offs etc and offers less resistance than the sunkfloat pat method above and pictured on a different post above (id use a shorter hook trace than the one pictured to keep the tangles down)
thirdly the ledgered livebait again an uptrac is needed i tie mine with size 12 (i think certainly small ones) power swivels at the mainline end and a normal swivel with a hard bead at the trace end as long as a roberts or equivalent run ring will pass over the smaller swivel with ease it is ok if it sticks when you pull it along a floor dont use it.
the hook trace on this can be a little longer with a polyball popper etc on it to lift the bait from the bottom and keep it moving
right also is a drifter set up but thats similar to the free roaming one
i would use the free roaming set up to cover an area of water to about 25 yards
the float pat is usefull to anchor a bait near a feature
the ledgered version for me is best used in shallow water where floats may be a problem say less than four feet deep and where there is no weed or bottom debris to foul the run ring
baitwise all of the above will work with baits from 4-9 inches in length comfortably provided you use the appropriate float weight combo
some of the rigs are on the PAC website and some can be found in fox guide to pike fishing if i could draw id put em up but as i cant youll have to wait for photos and my bait gear is buried at the minute sorry
