Hopefully this doesn't come across wrong, but, if your new to pike fishing, then I seriously wouldn't recommend you start targeting them during summer.
They're a very delicate fish, and even more so during the warmer months,as there's far less dissolved oxygen in the water,so they tire out VERY quickly, and should you happen to have trouble either un-hooking,or landing one,you may end up with a dead fish...
That said,if you were to get out with an experienced pike angler, you can have some fantastic sport using surface lures.
Hopefully that's a bit of food for thought.

i will fish for pike in the summer, but as tim has said theres no mucking about. strong tackle ie 50 - 80lb braids and no messing about on the bank if the fish is a special one it gets a pic if not its straight back. pike will fight like a deamon in summer but the blow themselfs out and need to be taken care of once landed.

also i dont know how you usually fish for pike, but its lures all the way in summer. a pike will swallow a bait in seconds in the walmer months so its not worth the risk.

hope this helps

As the lads said on a lot of the waters down south and this includes club rivers do not allow pike fishing before October through to March as pike don't like getting caught much in the summer again this is up to the owners and vaires from one water to another.
