been seriously thinking about doing some dead baiting but how many do u usually take and most of all how long do u leave them on in the water if u havnt had a take is there a set period of time u lads tend to leave them before changeing them or just chuck em out and wait for a bite
sorry for daft question but if ya dunt ask u dunt know

if i said string piece of
you get the idea it depends on the water type the fish the weather and on and on
if you can use 3-4 rods on larger waters do that and play around to find what works for you, but by the same token try using less rods and moving regulary as it may be the water your on the fish dont move that much so you will find more being mobile

Re: how much bait and how long do you leave them out
as noodle's already mentioned it all depends on the water your fishing, for instance the local water where we fish Poo City we tend to bait up and throw them out and leave them mainly because we know at any time it will go, and if i can get the bait back after catching a pike and it's not torn up to bit's i will re use it again.
now when i fish canals 2 rods will be more than enough i tend to move every 20 mins to half hour covering more water and then i only move 10ft this allows me to cover more water and with 2 rods that also allows me to cover distance for instance one rod far bank and the other in the middle being mobile really helps when hunting out pike.

i throw the bait out and if nothing moves after an hour, i have a little wined of the reel just to see if anything stirs....

yeah i tend to give my line a few sharp tug's if it's quiet especially on lives it just wakes the bait up a bit and stirs up any awaiting pike.

If im not catching i tend to get boared and toss handgranades in...That usually stirs em up abit!!!!

Re: how much bait and how long do you leave them out
If your fishing a new water for the first time its best to keep moving to try and find the fish, but once you start to learn the water and you can read the feeding patterns, you will know where to fish and when the pike will be feeding so you can leave the baits out as long as you need.
I must admit to liking fresh fish and the oilier the better, pike in a normal conditions will move around a water picking up fish that have been sat dead at the bottom for some time so the only reason to use fresh bait is the scent and your own confidence

if things are quiet, rip a big gawdy lure around the swim.can move dormant fish & they'll find your bait.

obsessed with it...use 4 different outfits, well 5 if you count using a 7wt fly rod on the cut for pike n perch....i've calmed down a bit though..i use these set ups ultra-lite,baitcaster,9' med spin, jerkbaits. Then i had to have all the lures to suit, then the colours etc etc.Tim will tell you.Now i found that you never use more than 6-9 lures on a sesh, and you use the same ones more & more.Thats why i sold off 75% of my lures & kept the ones i catch on & what works for the waters i fish.I think what water i'm visiting & then put the lures i think suitable in the box.

Re: how much bait and how long do you leave them out
i tend to move bait very often when piking and will leave a bait for about 15 to 20 minutes and will then slowerly bring it back a few feet at a time and so on with all the rods used
but there are occassion especially when i,m zedding where i,m fishing static and my bait will be placed to intercept the fish as the move through my swim

Re: how much bait and how long do you leave them out
back in the old days when the call of the river got me, as opposed to the sea, i'd fish a 4inch trout dead bait sink n draw through each swim a few times b4 moveing on .
unless a fish followed but wouldn't take, then i'd cut the bait to release a bit o blood & give it 1/2 hour static till moveing on.
it often worked but i'd never claim to be expert at this game.
