Re: some strange ways of hooking deadbaits from long ago
The bottom right one looks deadly as fook, with the hooks postioned right at the baits head, its just gunna get deep hooked every time, and with the extreme lack of bite indication they would have had in those days, I imagine a lot of fish were killed and not returned.
Not a safe rig at all.

Figure 6 on the second picture would suggest wobbling yeah, with the vein positioned at the baits head to give more action, they liked plenty of hooks huh.

8 would be good, if you replaced the part in its head for a pop up of some kind, and mounted the hooks further down towards its tail.

Re: some strange ways of hooking deadbaits from long ago
Its funny looking back at fishing rigs like those and easy to forget how lucky we are today. The guys using those rigs were pioneers of the tackle we use these days many of them would have tried and tested and then sorted out the good from the bad in those days. We have the benefit of all their experience and also we now have scientists to help us understand fish habits etc and many many tackle consultants out there trying it out every day, maybe one day people will look back on our gear and just think.............................TARTS!!!!!

Re: some strange ways of hooking deadbaits from long ago
Infact figure 2 on the second page is the rig I tend to use for free roving live baits now, and the one in the bottom left hand corner is now coming back into fashion with Mick Brown with the sigle hooks so have we actually come a full circle

Bloody hell some of those look like the carp rigs I pulled out of the trees on that work party
that first one could do with some more hooks though

Re: some strange ways of hooking deadbaits from long ago
when these rigs where used all pike where for the table.until quite recently pike men would light a cig at the 1st sign of a take then pick up the rods when they'd finished it.In norfolk a particulary nasty pike catching method was to use these long poles with a large hook on the end.the hook was for lifting these round plate things that had a live bait under it.when the plate flipped over the poacher or angler would lift the round plate thing out with the fish usually dead. They'd place these things up & down the fens & leave en for a few days....nasty.But back then they did'nt have a tesco,so thats how it was.
this book will make you smile has to how pike where looked at.
