pop up boom type thingy pike rig
I was talking to a lad today about popping up pike dead bait, i use the fox balsa inserts but this guy was trying to explain about a different way, he reckons you can get a boom with a buoyant ball on the end he thinks fox make them, anyway its weighted on the bottom then has a ball on top that acts as the pop up, you then tie you rig to the top of the boom and add a further two fox pop up balls(the red ones i think) to critically balance the dead bait. Does anyone have a clue about this rig personally i think this dude was a carper turned piker and loves complicated rigs, but in the same respect it sounded quite plausible. i would be worried however that three pop ups would lift the weight off the botom and defeat the object, what do you guys think.

well i can,t say i,ve ever heard of it BB but its not to say its doesn,t exist but you did say he was a carper
if i,m popping bait up i use these the poly balls can just be looped over the second treble they are simple
and attach the stick like this
and then just counter balnce with fox sinkers which comes in various sizes

Re: pop up boom type thingy pike rig
i cant figure out where the main line would go, unless the boom was inline and the mainline passed through it. also done a search for fox pop up booms and cant find anything.

Something like this if i understood the way he explained it, can anyone see any clear benefits between this and a normal popped up dead bait rig???

i was just going to type i think i know what he,s on about
bb your drawing is crap
i think he means this rig below then add the poly balls to the bait to lift it up and counter it by adding egg sinkers on the trace .
well thats how i,de fish it any way

Re: pop up boom type thingy pike rig
not a bad drawing considering it was memorised from a conversation with a bloke who i thought was mad, so its not a pop up boom but a ledger boom with a buoyant top i see so then by adding the balls to pop the fish up level kev whats the advantage i just think its all a bit complicated. 10/10 for getting it though mate i thought i was going crazy for a bit there, have some rep

Re: pop up boom type thingy pike rig
its not complicated at all ,as you can see from the my picture the stem was originally designed for bottom bouncing when trolling .
i use it as a simple running rig to fish a bait over bottom weed and by adding a single or two poly balls depending on the size of the bait it bait will sit over the weed clearly for the pike to see
it works brilliantly with a live bait with a a single poly ball on it

Re: pop up boom type thingy pike rig
they do also do a shorted bouyant stem of about 6 inches so you might want to look at them .
longshot will tell you how good they work

Re: pop up boom type thingy pike rig
yes its can work very well on rivers i have no problem using either on a drain or a river
i make my up traces a minimum of 20 inches in length these are longer than my actual traces which are approx 18 inches .

Re: pop up boom type thingy pike rig
well its not a silly question and i don,t use drop off indicator only in certain conditions
i infact use bobbin and surpringly you would think they would pull the bobbin up all the time, but they don,t
yes you will get a fiesty live bait occassionally pull it up and down but they don,t do it for very long and soon settle .
but when they get aggitated before a take you are aware (which you don,t see when using a drop off indicator) and can be ready for the run when it happens
the above situation would annoy some angler but when fishing with drop offs they can pull out of the clip if using a strong livebait , so it has to be set by adjusting the clip to stop this happening
