sand eels are they a good pike bait

are they any good as a bait ive picked a pack up from the tackle shop but whats the best way of fishing them and hooking them Question

There only a small soft bait Craig so it may be worth making a single hook rig for them and fish it tail hooked, there has been some big pike caught on sandeels so there worth a go Wink

about 8inch long mate is there a lot of flavour to them is it worth stabbing them a ouple of times with the hook point to release the juice Question

Actually its not that mad of an idea bom

But just a tip for you Craig, dont get obsessed by baits. Pike have been caught on sausages in the past which shows there not at all picky, if they are feeding and they pass your bait they will pick it up Wink

to be honest mate its the first time ive seen them in the tackle shop so i got some of them and lamprey cos i knew dean had caught on lamprey and on that yf day the lad who caught was using lamprey so i fought the sand eels was simalar to lamprey but smaller versions enough to tempt a jack im not fussed about gettig a big fish i just want to get 1 before i go grey and straight jacket mad lol!

seriously they ar edecent baits well suited for really long range stuff and normal fishing as well

sand eel does not taste nice even when cooked with a bit of garlic butter, which usually sorts anything out

i did worry you had picked up the wee tiny ones you can get

they sound more like launce again another decent bait

Fantastic sea bait, fish well as a pennel rig and lashed on with bait elastic, cast a bloody long way.

Top Pollock bait single hook I insert the hook through the mouth and work the eel up the shank of the hook and allow the hook to penitrate the bottom of the sand eel. bit of elastic, think casts like mad you can use it like a lure

yeah & the buggers get pb's on my fav big pike water...ian a pac31 lad had a 31.5...the lad wi him caught on a bare treble when he was plumbing the depth...scabby git Respect

Launce and sandeels are the same thing. Snake launce are just the biggest UK sandeels.

aye but they are badged differently by the likes of ammo sandeels in the shop near me are about 3-4 inches long and not even a cm accross the launce on the other hand are a usable size.

thinking as im typing which is a rare one. is there any difference, or is it just a larger speciman?

i know i agreed but ten i thought i dont really know if it is the same species

Shall I try again. SANDEELS AND LAUNCE ARE THE SAME THING. Either term for the species Ammodytidae is correct. Snake Launce is a general reference to the LARGEST of the 5 known UK species.
