PIKE Baits
In this section of our pike forum i'd like to run through a few
of the baits we use for pike fishing and how you can attach them to your
trebles
DEAD BAITS
Without doubt when fishing dead baits this is a distinct probability and the rig below will hopefully provide some assistance in overcoming the problems of delaying the strike and the possibility of deep hooking and injuring the pike.
BAITS
These are some of the baits we use in pike fishing
Roach
this is a very good fresh water bait pike love them and will pick up a roach off the bottom, stab the dead bait roach or cut off it's head to release some extra scent in the water.
Eel's
Very slimy and also full of juice flavor simply cut a 5" section off the eel and chocks away pike will also take these off the bottom.
Lamprey
Very slimy, very bloody and horrible to deal with (IMO) but when you cut a section of lamprey and squeeze it you'll see why the pike love these as food there really bloody and all you need is a similar size section as an eel 5" or so.
Perch
a spikey dorsal fin won't stop a pike taking one of these fish
Rudd
with Rudd been primarily a medium to surface fish these are a prim target for a pike lying in ambush just waiting for a rudd to swim over the top of it, you can fish these dead baits either on the bottom or popped up.
PIKE
A pike wouldn't hesitate to eat one of it's own more pike are eaten by other pike when an angler catches one and reels in a much larger pike will take the hooked and defenseless pike the angler has caught
Sprats
Good bait's small good for jack pike and perch
Smelt
Smelt has a distinct smell of cucumber and the pike are really attracted to this scent in the water a very good bait to use in winter
Mackerel
When fishing is going slow and you find yourself with out a bite on the fresh water baits try switching to a sea bait a mackerel very oily and full of flavor pike just love them.
Herring
Another good sea bait which is also as good as a mackerel should never rule out a Herring i could get you that personal best pike
Pollan
A naturally buoyant bait no need for pop up foam with this bait it is naturally buoyant and will sit up off the bottom perfectly, very good in weedy areas
Sand eel's
Good old bait not many people use these for pike fishing to my knowledge as there mainly used as a sea bait for bass, wrass, pollock and cod but i'd never rule this out could maybe even bagg a nice big perch

Re: PIKE Baits
That diagram on hooking baits isnt right. Its good for rivers but not for still waters.
For still waters the top hook is inserted in the tail root the bottom hook in the flank

Lures are just tools that perform a function. You need to tell us what function you want them to perform before I could say try this one or that one. The bit of water your fishing should tell you to use a shallow/deep etc etc type lure. Then you mess with action or colour to find what the fish are keyed into. When you catch you've answered the questions correctly, (the lures ask the fish answer) when you dont catch your questions are wrong. No lure on earth will make a crap bit of water good But a good bit of water will make a crap lure look good
WATERCRAFT, + LURE = fish................I can tell you all about the lures all day long, but I have no idea about the "watercraft" needed for YOUR venues, I don't know them. (luckily for you)
