Make your own boilies
Making your own boilies is a much cheaper way of getting bait, and by making your own you can roll them to any shape, size, flavour you want.
To make boilies what you do first is to make a flavoured paste. This paste is then rolled into many small balls, boiled, (hence the term boilie), left to dry and then frozen . To do this you need eggs, a liquid flavour, a sweetener and a base mix.
Firstly you need to make a base mix, the base mix I use is:
8oz Semolina (available from supermarkets)
4oz Ground Rice (available from supermarkets)
4oz Soya Flour (available from health food shops)
The Semolina, Rice and Soya Flour powders are then poured into a large freezer bag. Blow the bag up (with the powder inside) like a balloon. Twist it around at the top to trap the air in the bag. Give the bag a very good shake, so that all the powders inside it are well mixed up.
That's the base mixed. You now need to get your flavours together, you can buy powdered/liquid flavours in tackle shops, but i just use ordinary liquid dyes and flavours like food colouring.
I use 2ml sweetener, and around 5-10ml of flavouring and colouring.
Crack 4 medium sized eggs into a mixing bowl or pan, add your flavours and dye to the eggs. Once you have added the flavours and sweetener to the eggs beat the eggs well up with a fork. You will need to beat the eggs for a couple of minutes.
Now you need to add the base mix, but DO NOT ADD IT ALL AT ONCE!!! Add about a cup full of base mix to the eggs and mix it well in with a fork. It will go like sloppy porridge. Leave it to stand for about five minutes, before adding more powder. This will give the base mix you have added time to absorb some of the egg/flavour mix and will help to stop the mix drying out to much later on. After 5 mins, continue to add base mix slowly. You will come to the time when the mix is to stiff to mix with a fork anymore.
When it gets like this kneed it with your hands.
You will know when the paste is ready when it forms a firm ball that isn't sticky and can hold its shape, yet is easy to mould. Kind of like putty or 'play dough' Now roll the mix into a ball shape and at whatever size you want them to be, I do this by getting a bit and then rolling in the middle of your 2 hands continuously in a circle shape.
Bring some water to the boil and add about 20 at a time to the boiling water. Do not add to many so that the water goes off boil. After about 2 minutes of boiling take the baits out of the boiling water and let them dry on a clean towel or cloth. I use an old chip pan, as it is easy and safe to lower to lower the baits in and out in the chip basket. (It's so much easier this way!!) Let the boilies dry for around 30 mins and then freeze them in a freezer back, until you want to go fishing then get em out!!
And that's it, hope it works well for you. Let us know if you make some and if they do well!

Re: Make your own boilies
yes we can all learn something new every day and its good that these site are now out there to learn from and i just wished when i made bait we could have called on sites like this it would have made it so much easier .
i must admit i used to do my fair share of making me own baits some good and some bad and i know stotty still keep his hand in a makes some, he will certainly agree with me that there are alot of very good baits on the market that you can actually buy a kilo of bait a lot cheaper than you can make them unless you are making alot but that also depends on what you are using and whether you are making your own base mix or buying it and then just adding flavours .
however its great to make your own but i think you should know the nutritional values of what you are using this makes your end result much better and there can be few more rewarding moments than when your own homemade catches you that carp.
its trial and error when making baits and again i bet stotty like myself has made batches that have gone straight in the bin or not caught a thing but when you get it right then happy days are here

Your spot on there Kevin. I have spent £ over the years and thrown whole batches away. The secret is a good base mix that’s the start of all good bates these people have spent a fortune on developing there baits. But as I have said to Dan in carp fishing the one thing you cant get from a shop is confidence. If you have that in your bait you can sit on your hands and get on with your fishing. If you lack that no mater how shiny your gear is you’re up a certain creak with out a paddle.
I will also add some baits work better on some waters I have a bait that takes one water apart I use it every time I go there and it catches but on my club lakes its never caught a thing now work that one out.
