I run a trace from the back treble then you can ether ram it up the ass of the dead or in the mouth sounds like a film I have at home.

Re: popping up deads using fox wood inserts
when attaching your bouyant pop up there are many different ways of doing it but it must be captive on your rig this makes sure the pike cannot swallow it
you could use fuse wire but although its a quick way of attaching them can it can be a bit fiddly if your hands are cold on the day
a good idea would be to make yourself some of these which is very easy indeed
you can then just slide them on and off the trace when required and can be re-used time and time again and also you can then attach other types of pop up for your piking cause of the quick change clip on the end
this are threaded through the bait
and if you want to resort back to a bottom bait its a case of just taken if of the trace .
i aslo make some for popping up live baits or smaller baits over weed
hope this helps

Re: popping up deads using fox wood inserts
Nice write up tackletart
So I'm presuming the wire with the looped end is thread back down the bait from its mouth and out its ass end?
But where/how do you fix that loop back onto the rig?
Cheers

Re: popping up deads using fox wood inserts
put the link onto the trace first by passing it over the swivel end
then hollow out the bait to make a place for the wooden insert to fit first, best to do this with the baits still frozen but make sure not to split the bait
gently push a thin strong pin i made mine from a wall tie with a small split ring on the end but you could use a long baiting needle or stringer needle all its got to do is pull the link through the bait
once you have pulled it through attach your bouyant stick and pull back into the bait and then attach trebles into the bait now it ready to attach to your rig

Re: popping up deads using fox wood inserts
the thing im wondering now is can i use this on a running lead set up or should i use it with a fixed lead style using carp tail and rubber setup so its fixed but lead can breakaway if needed

The secret is to minimise resistance Pike dont like resistance thats why you fish with open spools not a bait runner so running rigs all the way

Re: popping up deads using fox wood inserts
its will you can add weights to your trace to counter balance so just the bait pops up and not the whole trace but over heavy weed let it come off the full length of the trace
and also when you tighten every thing up to put into your drop off you tighten up to the lead so it can,t float to the surface
