What you need, basically in laymans terms, is ....."a Woody"
Get the guru to go down and fish with you, you'll learn far more from an hour with him, than you will being frustrated not catching anything on your own.
Perhaps they've had some stick and been fished for A LOT, normally you could switch lure and get a few solid hits scratch .....O Wooooody lol!

I often have a Woody Cool Smoking

However back to pike fishing, would you be able to come over to my neck of the woods one evening Craig, if so I will get you a pike, not a problem Cool Smoking

Lure fishing is not all about casting a lure and winding it back in, a couple of hours with me on the Calder will give you an insight into how deadly lure fishing can be Wink

There are some good pike in both Horbury and Wakefield Lagoons Craig the biggest issue for me is that they are both very deep and very clear which makes lure fishing very difficult for the following reasons.

Deep Water

To fish deep water you need lures that can get down to the depths so that you can stir the pike to strike, this generally means large heavy lures, which means stepped up tackle, its also a lot harder than people think to work lures correctly at depth as everything has to be done much slower, otherwise the lure will lift off the bottom far too quickly which takes your lure away from the strike zone.

Clear Water

Everybody gones on about water colour when lure fishing and in some respects they are correct, pike will feed in coloured water but a good rule of thumb is 18" vis minimum, now clear water is an issue because pike can suss that something is not right but will still come and investigate the lure, which is why your getting so many follows, if the water was coloured chances are you would start getting takes as the pike has a eat it or leave it mindset rather than follow mindset. in clear water where follows are common try summat different.Speed your retrieve right up,i've had many instances of pike that repeatedly follow lures in,soon has i rip it hard, blam they hit it.also be ready to change lures quickly.in clear water if you get a follow & it won't play ball, put a surface lure on & cast in the direction the pike went.
follows on wobbled deads can be converted by allowing the bait to fall to the bottom, leave it 10 seconds, then lift the rod & retrieve, then let the bait settle again, then repeat...pike like most ambush predators love to chase prey down, watch how a cat behaves when hunting or just playing.you can learn loads by just observing predators & fish or mammal they behaviour is pretty similar.
