Deadbait thoughts and Questions

As you know i have only really just started my piking.
So i have a question and also want to see what you think about something i think i learnt at the weekend.
Q. I have just bought a batch of sardines - knowing that they are reputed to be a soft bait i bought some elasticated thread to wrap them with. my question is if a deadbait is wrapped in that way will this not impair the hooks ie it will always be attached and therefore effect the hooks hooking ability?
Secondly i spent two days last week fishing with sprats - i only had pre-bought traces [sorted that now] and this meant that with such a small bait i inevitably had a hook in the tail and another near the head. Now i didnt like the big gap but didnt think much more about it - until i got home.
now from stuff i read that evening i believe i was accidently increasing the risk of deep hooking - due to the fact that although i strike very early - a pike will try and 'swallow' head first and therefore especially with small baits i was risking the first hook going deep.
I now believe that the hook should never go beyond halfway down the deadbait with the other in the tail.
thought if i am correct this could be essential advice for anyone else starting to fish for pike.
do you agree with this or am i worrying unduly? The last thing i want is to increase the chance of a deep hooked fish.

some baits you use will be 'soft' , typically herrings, sprats and sardines suffer this problem and the problem of secure hook holds for casting can be achieved by using elasticated thread to 'tie' the second trace treble firmly to the tail root.
if the conditions are dry you could use PVA thread or tape as this will dissolve after casting and offer the ability to strike the hooks out of the bait and greatly enhance the hook hold on pike
i myself now don,t use bait elastic and will hook up my softer baits when still frozen
, its refreshing to hear someone actually thinking about the hooking and what could possibly happen to the pike as there nothing that breeds pike like neglect
i would all way strike early myself

I do the same soft baits i take frozen and keep in a cool bag. You can cast them this way but on the strike the hooks come free of the bait.
i have all sorts of traces made up Tim (Nixon ) wet him self at some of the big ones i use for whole Mackerel then i go down to small for sand eels its a bit like carp fishing handy to have a few rigs ready to go

I now do what kevin does and keep my traces in a trace wallet. No springy traces now, and I have also spied on the way he does certain things and adopted them too, ( sorry kev! lol) Nothing like a good teacher to put you right. And Porker will agree I'm sure.

good questions healdy. some of thats been bouncing about my head. you know i use the elastic for big soft baits and my bait is always kept frozen. so 'i,ll give it a try without but i'm not one for really deep hooking my 2nd treble in the root of the tail with tough baits like mackeral for the fact that it doesn't come off and can risrict the strike the same as elasticated cotton

I think the lads have pretty much covered everything, but for me the secret with soft baits is to keep them frozen as long as possible, it also gives them better casting weight.
Another thing to think about is to keep soft baits for close work and use Lamprey, trout and eels for distance work.
As the lads have said its always good to have a number of traces already made up, I have sets for bait fishing and sets for live baits which are generally closer together.
But it is great that you are thinking about these issues Healdy, it shows your learning a lot in a short period of time

Healdy, the sardines that you buy fresh from morrisons are much better than the ones from the tackle shop, there much tougher and tend to stay on the hooks a bit better too.

just as an extention to this, what are you guys opions on fresh v frozen baits. i recall reading somewhere that fresh deads will always outfish frozen ones.

i've only really used frozen myself, if ever i've had a fresh dead then i've swaped it for a fresh live hahaah

Well, that 12lber I had from a local water was a supermarket morning bought mack. Not caught on frozen before or since on that venue but I am hardly the voice of experience...
I was thinking the same thing when I picked up some reduced pricers from tesco this aft and wondered whether I should have frozen frozen them or not...
I did but I may well defrost them the night before if the general consensus is thaw for success!

If the sardines are fresh not frozen - arent they very soft ie difficult to cast?
I have been using frozen but a second cast once thawed has to always be gentle or they split/tear.

now most bait companies and frozen fish like sardines you get in bulk packs etcare frozen on the ship
which is fresher?
5 days on ice or frozen within a couple of hours at most?
anyway rank baits that are yellow and been refroze about twenty times work just as well

like noodle says it dont matter but i freeze mine as soon as i buy them
that is if i dont go fishing strate afta buying them i prefer useing frozen baits when useing deadbaits theres alot less hasstle and there alot better to cast

always used frozen myself mate, and often refreezw and reuse baits just read this somewhere and thought i'd try this whilst i had some fresh(ish) baits
