Split rings: yey or nay??
who has a split ring on the nose eye of their jerkbaits? im about 50/50 at the moment and apart from the obvious difference in connecting up speed im not sure on the benefit? cant tell if its affecting the action? Which do you choose and why?

Re: Split rings: yey or nay??
I've never felt the need to add split rings on the nose of jerkbaits. I use the largest sized snap from Lumby on my Jerkbait traces so maybe this helps as they are a very wide gape.

Nope, still using 90lb seven strand - again, haven't felt the need. Had a few thousand pike on the stuff - I don't like change !!!!

Re: Split rings: yey or nay??
had a split ring open up on a muskie machinery spinnerbait, so even if there was some benefit to the action (which i doubt) i wouldn't bother because then i'd lose lures and i'm tight.

Re: Split rings: yey or nay??
If you attach the trebles with a split ring, surely the same situation can arise, or would you expect the hooks to straighten/break before the split ring fails. Or am I being a thick Carp angler?

It just occurred to me that you'd probably want that to happen! Better to lose a treble. Ok, I'm a thick Carp angler.

Re: Split rings: yey or nay??
With my jerkbaits and traces, there's no split ring on the nose of the lure,or on the trace. I like to keep the weight of the trace down to an absolute minimum,so I get the best action possible out the chosen lure.
Traces are simply a formed loop on the top(attaches straight the braid), and then the other end is the snap-lock or duo lock whichever you prefer.
Trace wire is 174 solid steel wire from rokmax.

Re: Split rings: yey or nay??
Ok I have to be the odd one out 90% of all my lures have a split ring, I have found that some of the new jerkbaits have very tight eyes especially if they have an epoxy finish so a split ring helps movement and the swing of a lure and thats because I use Chico's traces and they are a little bit small on the snap. Scottys traces are much bigger so no real need to add a split ring IMHO. Now soft plastics are a different story, I think they need maximum movement and the eyes are usually tighter, another plus is for extra weight when fishing burts

i see mate, i was wondering if the action would be improved at all. i'll have to do some experiments with the lures i have.

Re: Split rings: yey or nay??
I used to use split rings on all mine untill i ran out, then being a tight ar5e yorkshireman i went awhile without buying anymore, did'nt really notice any difference with or without so don't bother now
Re: Split rings: yey or nay??
I love the "i'm tight" references - 2 in 10 posts...
I'm the same, if it comes with one, I use it.
If it doesn't, I don't!
ps, i'm tight.

I'm gonna give it a try on a few lures that are a pain to get on the clip and see how it goes. I pop one on the burt and see if it makes a difference to the action too.
