When using braid to lure fish do you still need to use a trace?

Thanks Nathan

Simply put. Yes.
If fishing a water where you knew pike weren't present, and you were targeting perch, then you'd be fine without a trace.
But for pike, always with a trace.
I make mine out of 40lb carbo flex, then crimp the swivels and snap loks on.

Thanks for the replys.

If I'm using 30lb braid what strength trace should I be using? One of a lower breaking strain or higher?

Even on my spin rod set-up I have 25lb braid, and still use the same 40lb carbo flex as I do for all my bait fishing too.
If you wanted to match it,then you can get it in 30lb: http://www.harrissportsmail.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=15372

It's not like coarse fishing where you would want the trace to break before the main line, it's the fact that it's wire.

The teeth on a pike will go straight through line, especially braid.

For lure fishing, I use 100lb titanium but I chuck jerkbaits now...

making your own spinning traces with 25, 30 or 40lb carboflex will all be fine. Pre-made ones can be a bit suspect at times (the drennan ones I have seen snap in half) do you do your own traces at all?

If you do, just use some carboflex and crimps Wink
