Mackeral heads
I've been reading about this elsewhere, and wondered what our esteemed Pike hunters think. Are Mackerel heads a bait worth using. I have total confidence in the tail section or whole Joey's, but heads? What's your thoughts on this?

Re: Mackeral heads
I have caught on them in the past Ken but I don't rate then half as much as a tail section. Great as a conger eel bait though but don't get a lot of them in the lee a Ken

Lol no, not many Congers make it through Bow!! It's one things that has always caused me a little worry, I've tried them in the past but never had a run, but a tail! well they're of like sprinters sometimes.

IMO and please I don't see my self as a great pike angler. If there having it you will catch but when things are hard the tail section with the guts and blood seem to work better I don't know why but i fished two rods last year i took out four mackerel with me and cut them in half giving my self 8 baits (funny that a ) i had more runs on the tails than the heads. I even swapped them round to see if it was the spots. Don't get me wrong I caught on them but not like the tails. Since then it has always stuck in my head (as it were)

Yes I get the gist of that Stotty. I think I'll just stick to what I have confidence in. So its a case of heads I lose, tails I win! I'll get my coat!

Re: Mackeral heads
heads i lose tails i win... Like it ken....
What i do when using the heads is feed the trace wire through its mouth first, quite easy to do,
but i do only use one treble which gives a good hold,

i tent to throw them in the lake at the end of a session and especially more so if i'm if going back the next day
Re: Mackeral heads
Yes, I know that many anglers do that, but its normally a week between visits in my case.

I hate waste,
At the end of the day money is short for most of us, and its a bait that could catch you that something special when in use....

sort of ken....
but when they pick it up, i find you have more chance to hook it as the head fits in it mouth...

Re: Mackeral heads
Great bait Ken, for the same reasons as Dan. At the end of every session most lads chuck there baits into the margins and then that night the Pike come in and hoover them up, Pike feed much more confidently during the dark and thats a fact. I have night fished for Pike about 6 times and I have never caught anything under double figures with the best being my 24lb 3oz pb so I know what I am talking about. Mak heads WOULD be perfect if it wasnt for there size, the reason I say this is that is that Pike feed quickly at night time and can woof a bait of that size down in seconds so deep hooking is a possability, you can use a single treble which would give you half a chance of getting away with it but remember your asleep! it takes too long to get out of bed, bob your boots on and hit a strike so its big baits at nightime for me
