NOT ready yet
well, its the begining of october and you guys are getting all excited about deadbaiting. so you would think that me being a pike angler i would be heading the que for the lamprey right?.......WRONG .
i dont know what it is but i cannot get in the mood for it, i have had a great summer chucking the lures around and i dont want that to stop. im sure that one or two of my venues hold a big girl that will take a lure, and i want some of that. dont get me wrong im sure if i want to break the 20lb mark it will probably fall to a dead and i had a great winter last year deadbaiting it really set me on my way and was a good learning curve for me. no doubt that once i hear the alarms screaming at me the juices will flow again but till then wheres mi jerkbait rod????

Re: NOT ready yet
haha!
It's the buzz of it smashing into a lure that's keeping you there mate - and while they are taking the lures there's no problem sticking to them!
I went for a canal sesh and started on the lures then my 1 week old reel broke so I had to chuck out the deads!!
I wont state the make of the reel to save some people's blushes but it's the press release button on the spool that went for a swim

Re: NOT ready yet
I tend to lure fish all the way through the year and although I still get a few on baits the lure fishing does slow down a bit but as long as you adjust your style of lure fishing then lures can and do outfish deads especially on rivers, so the lures will not be packed away just yet

Its still mild - the water is warm and they are still up for chasing a lure.
When it gets colder you will be ready to bring the deadbaits out - don't forget it makes no difference which rod you bring - you are only there to net , unhook, weigh and photograph my fish ................please dont forget that again

Re: NOT ready yet
I like dead baiting for pike (think its the carp angler in me) but most of the time i use one dead bait rod and a lure rod. The lure can wake a fish up and bring it in to the dead. This has worked for me many times over the years.

i took a lure rod with me on most occations last winter, it saved the day on more than one sesh. i didnt really know what i was doing at the time and i would like to think im a better lure angler now (id better be really!!). so i will probs do the same again this year but i would hope for better results. i really do feel there is a big lure caught fish to be had in this early part of the season.

Re: NOT ready yet
It would have obviously helped before my blank - if my supposed mate had told me there was 3 feet of weed in 3feet 6 inches of water - which he would have known if he was searching the water properly with his lures rather than just the top 6 inch of water

Re: NOT ready yet
i know what you mean neil the temps are still up and the pike will respond to the lures more than deads, however i've done very little lure fishing these last 2 weeks mostly down to the fact the rivers have been a mess and partly down to me wanting to do a bit of research on my target waters for the baits this winter, so been to a couple of waters with a couple of deads and sliding float setup plumping depths and having 5 minutes in each swim

Re: NOT ready yet
well healdy and me have a new venue to check out, sounds like it could be the real deal and holds a good head of upper doubles to 20's. this could be a good spot to rekindle my deadbaiting. got some new gear coming aswell, only terminal stuff but it will provide me with the means to fish some new rigs that could be the edge.
