Re: dislike trebles
alarms and some sort of indication either drop offs or float and strike early
maybe also try single hook
and most important go with somebody that can show u the ropes

Re: dislike trebles
Good call Craig.
The single hook method does work, I've seen it done.
but for trebles...
As soon as you see your float moving/drop-off indicator fall, wind down and lift into it early, better to pull the bait out and miss the fish than to catch it and lose it to death.
Best way to learn about striking is to go with a guy who pikes already, learning by reading is great for a basics, but practicalities are learned out there 1st hand.
Took me quite a few trips before I went out alone for the pike, was always scared of damaging them or myself due to lack of knowledge.
Trebles are the most reliable hooking implements but only when used properly.
All the best of luck in your conquests!

Re: dislike trebles
First of all welcome to the forum Steve
I think the lads have pretty much covered everything with some good soild advice.
I have never deep hooked a Pike in my 5 years of Pike fishing (Touch Wood) the reason why is because I tend to use either very sensative float set ups or ledger rigs. I never fish without front and rear alarms which are set as sensative as possible and I always use a minimum of 3oz of lead which stops pike lifting the lead and gives me runs rather than drop back runs.
i have actually written a section called handling pike in the predator section showing how to set up for ledgering thats also worth a look.

Re: dislike trebles
thanks for that mate im thinking that perhaps i should have had a lot more deep hooked pike .i only ever fished with a float the old fashioned pike bunge and waited 5 or 6 hrs before stricking .ok that's a bit of an exaggeration but gave it plenty or should i say too much time before striking . need to give the pike thing a lot more thought before i try again and as i said before ill go with someone that knows what hes doing .all the best .steve

Re: dislike trebles
Depending on what time of year your fishing (Pike tend to gobble baits down quicker during the warmer months) 5-10 seconds is more than enough time before striking after the first sign of a take. There are a lot of things to consider ie size of bait, where the hooks are placed on the bait etc etc but if you work on 5-10 seconds you wont be far off

Re: dislike trebles
By the time the Pike season begins again I'm sure you'll know a lot more. Confidence comes with knowledge, so do your homework and read woodchuckers threads on here. He really does know how it's done.

Re: dislike trebles
We all have to start somewhere but if your like me, I cant stop reading about fishing, or watching fishing on tv, I am like a sponge for knowledge, so when I target a species I put 100% into it, otherwise whats the point

well looking forward to it.want to fish for all types of fish this time round not just carp .not that i have any thing against carp fishing and i will do it but i seemed to just fish for carp and if it was too cold id have ago for pike as second best .i would like to say that my opinion has changed .fank gawd .and dont feel that any fish is second best .just want to learn the skill to catch the species i want to catch and not the fish that happens to swim by.hope to start in a few weeks .
