I know it can be difficult when a fish wont keep still, but with a little more thought and less panic, niether the fish nor you will come to any harm.

Re: sunday 7th feb 2010
As Ken has already said, a unhooking mat is a must, the slime on the fish is needed so that they can keep there body free from disease and for warmth so if it slides around on the floor it will loose this. The best way to unhook Pike is the straddle the fish, ie have the fish between your legs while your nealt down. have a look at my handling Pike thread in the predator section.

well done lads, something you will learn over your angling years and that will be fish control, but as Ken has stipulated fish care is paramount always use a matt.
but big well done non the less .
Re: sunday 7th feb 2010
now you know how important it is i'm sure you'll try better next time, a bigger net would be a wise investment, not only is it better for the fish but you would struggle to get a big fish in that net and you wouldn't want to lose a fish at the net after doing all the hard work in catching one.
a few other tips incase you dont know, have all un hooking equipment at hand and close to you unhooking mat, try to stay calm and work together to make sure the fish goes back un harmed quickley. let the fish rest in the margin once you have unhooked it before handling it for a photo, this will give you a few moments to gather your thoughts, calm down and get prepaired for that trophy shot of your prize. also if you are struggling dont be afrraid to ask a near by angler i'm sure they will be more than willing to lend a hand and maybe show you a few other tricks
well done boys, keep at it and just pay a little extra thought next time. dont feel too bad though we was all young once and have all made mistakes
