florocarbon for hooklengths

ive benn looking in the tackleshops lately and along side the wire trace seems to be florocarbon. i know it is abriason resistant but is it ok for pike trace's. i ended up buying 20lb drennan soft straind but was wondering if i could use florocarbon?

I have had pike go through Fluorocarbon when they have taken boilies so I would say no but you need one of the pred boys to say yes or no Woody or Noodle will put you right.

The whole idea of using wire is so the pike doesn't cut through it and end up swallowing the trebles which can be fatal to a pike, now getting back to carp fishing i have had fluorocarbon snap on me in weed or snags and on carp so i would say "NO" it's no good for pike !

But you got to ask yourself why would you consider using something which a pike "COULD" cut through and not wire ???

it wasn't the fact i would use it i was more wondering why it is now put with the wire trace in some tackle shops. the shop i went to today has a corner just for pike fishing and it was in there with it, it did seem silly but i know nothing of the properties of florocarbon and thought i would ask. i have always used wire normally 25lb drennan 7 straind and recently drennan soft straind in 20lb.

I do know they use 50# fluro for pike fishing on the fly

i my self would not like it but the good old USA its the norm

i WOULDN,T USE flourocarbon for a predator hook link ever and DEFINATELY wouldn,t reccomend it either

i take that as a no then. i knew you lot would know about it. it is very confusing when you go to a tackle shop and its all in the same section. so thanx for setting me straight.

no mate the cat fish section is further along.the section it was in was all for pike fishing nidge.

lots of predator guys who make their own flies and lures in some cases are using florocarbon to make weed guards on the hooks, personally i use fluorocarbon when im fly fishing for pike as trace wire is difficult to cast over especially with a heavy fly for pike, where as fluoro and especially i find krystonite has a beautiful supple action but i would not be using it for pike traces.

This one keeps popping up, but for me its a big no-no a pikes mouth can cut through 80lb braid, I have had it happen to me so its a no brainer for me

im getting sick of this FC hard mono debate

ok ive used it (shock horror) for perch where carp and pike are present and the carp cause me more grief on livebaits than the pike do beleive it or not

anyway i used 80lb seaguar FC as an uptrace twith a short hook trace and a single

the very 1st pike that took the bait bit through the 80lb fc uptrace under the pressure of a 1.25 avon

you can keep it for me its useless, isaying that mi waiting on a couple of people who are trying something a little different (250lb hard mono) with big lures

Ive been involved with this debate for a good few years now arguing the toss on muskie forums where most of the yanks love the stuff

you know what they dont beleive the breakages they get are down to the fish. One even put down being bitten off on a plough which is something like 12-14 inches long (memeory fails me on that at teh minute) he thought it was a snapping turtle that had taken the lure and bitten him off

i asked how big are these turtles and how big are the mouths

apparently the average is a few inches accros

anyway rant over if you want subtle traces try the soft stuff (49strand) from steve moore, ET the proper ET ot the friendly fisherman et, or maybe a 19 strand like drennan do

I'm with noodle on this. What gets me is if you use the suggested mono in the breaking strains mentioned its thicker than the wire normally used.

I've had a Pike bite me off on a fluoro leader of 60lb and would never risk it again
