Post by billy barbel Sun Feb 07, 2010 4:47 pm

Just been reading an article on the best carp not to be used these days, due to the development on more modern baits, glugs etc some of the best known carp baits have been almost forgotten about, i thoguht we could post up the baits you might have used back in the good ol days before boilies became an ever present in todays swims.

I will start the ball rolling with this one its not mine as i have only carp fished for a few years.

Berries from trees over hanging the swims

Yup years back, after sunday dinner was prepaired all the peelings from the veg would get mashed up into a pulp, flour added to give it some stiffness and that use tobe used as a gound bait, i remember taking boiled rice too which would tempt out the perch...........

sometimes I do.. and your berries are still deadly on rivers..

also it's what fish have grown to understand as a food item..

the danger is.. if it is not recognised they could ignore it..

if talking about rivers then yes or with overhanging trees that bear fruit..

however land locked the bait is something they get used to..

but like the other day if they are fished for regularly then you could catch them on s**te...!!!

not natural baits but
two i used to use alot and was very successful on back at the start of the eighties and both were pastes one was a home made paste made from sausage meat binded to a firm paste with custard powder

and duncan kays , black magic (brilliant )

i do occassionally use the home made one but the second one black magic i don,t cause you can,t get it any more wish you could though

I still use a lot of naturals. Corn is and has been a favorite of mine for year. Worms and maggots I use a lot a luncheon meat. As I do a lot of one rod stalking there great baits. But let’s face it fish see so much pellet since the boilies was invented in the 80s boilies are almost a natural to them. The whole reason the boilies was invented The boilies itself was a progression from those early paste baits, the anglers were catching a lot of 'nuisance' fish so it made the bait bigger and tougher making it a more selective bait.

as you can see corn can catch you other things than carp
