Post by healdy Tue Mar 22, 2011 10:53 am

hi

well the sun is shining and very soon i will be swapping my gear and leaving the deadbaits in the freezer. so with carp in mind i have started to put my bait together.

so my question is simply what do you have in your bucket Wink ?

I always start using small flouro hookbaits - yellow pineapple and n butyric acid pop ups and a new white one from ccmoore [northern specials].
I will also be using quite a bit of particle - mainly hemp and a parti blend mix - and i will fish one rod with a stack of maize - mix of the real stuff and a floating plastic.

Later on i will start expecting takes on my foodbait - for me - stickybaits maple - topped with yellow plastic always Wink .

Unless bream are a big issue i will also use quite a bit of pellet - for me a mix of ccmoores betaine ultra mix and mini - amino green and mini shrimp pellets.

what about you lot?

I've started my baiting campaign on Ricketts with Vitalin mixed with lots of Hemp. Bit we've had a few heavy frosts lately, so I've not been putting loads in. As the water warms I'll increase the amount and I'll also be baiting with pellet.

I've got mainline cell (and pop ups), spam, some pineapple flavoured boilies (and pop ups) from Kent Particles, spam, sweetcorn, spam, hemp, vitalin, spam, tuna, spam and spam. I have been stockpiling for a few months ready for the spring and summer! Spam!

Will be adding pellets of various types, using chilli powders, chickpeas, plastic baits, Chum Mixer biscuits, bread, worms and anything that I think will work in the conditions or venue I'm on!!

Spam!

i did say to myself that i wouldn't be hammering the carp this year but as things are warming up the thought of them carp coming out of thier slumber and wanting a good feed is really starting to excite me.
after using the bait last year with great success i don't think i need to try any other boilie than the sticky baits bloodworm.
if i end up doing a lot of carping then i would buy some particles to help keep costs down

Hey Guys,

I have the following for my weekend carp session in early April:

1. 2.5kgs Cell Mainline 14mm boilies

2. Hawaiian Pinneaple 12mm Flouro Pop Ups

3. 5kgs 13mm Halibut Pellets

4. 5kg Bucket of Blood worm and red pepper extract pellets 3mm

5. 5 pints of maggots

What do you think? enough? too much? too varied?

Any help is truly valued!

Nice looking selection - plenty of options!

My advice would be [not knowing the water and stocking levels] don't forget you don't have to use it all!

I generally unless i know or feel a big hit is on the cards fish for one fish at a time - setting small traps - alternatively fish one rod over bait - maybe a spod mix containing a mix of your pellet - some maggots and some whole and chopped boilie and a second or third rod on a pineapple pop up with a pva bag of pellet cast away from the baited area - then adapt to suit what response i recieved.

as they say you can always add some more but you can never take it out!

Enjoy and let us know how you get on in the blog section Wink

wise words

I tend to fish with 'bite at a time' in mind as well. Small offerings around the hookbait, I tend to use pva mesh bags on every cast so I have confidence in presentation. Maybe a few offerings around too.

On a longer weekend you could look to build a swim up with more and more bait but heaving it in all at once when you arrive could kill it for you.

Good luck on your session though

Thought I'd try the Quest bait range this year. 3 for 2 in my tackle shop so I got some fruity trifle, pinapple and tiger nut crunch.

They will all be used throughout the year with one rod on one flavour and another on the other one.

No idea about what works on my new club lake so starting with a pva of 4 crushed boilies, a few andom pellets and 10 boilies chucked in over the top in the general area. Not big feed going in but If I get a take, refresh the bait in the area and add a bit more each time.

I'm desperately under-experienced in carp angling outside commercials so have no real idea what to feed. From what I have read and understood, this should do. Don't want to fill in a spot when I get there as I've heard far too many stories of carp only taking baits with a little stick mix by it!

The learning never ends and for me it hasn't really started much either on these normally stocked lakes! lol!

its a huge learning curve mate and its one of those things where you'll never know it all and will always have room for improvement.
your approach isn't much different to how i would start off really, the only thing i would add is try avoid cheep boilies. i know we have an expensive hobby but some things are worth the extra money.
if you only intend on setting one fish traps then a kilo of boilies will last a fair few sessions fishing 3 rods and at about 8-9 quid a kilo that could work out as little as 3 quid a session/ a quid a rod. deffinatly worth it in my eyes
upto last year i always used shelf life boilies and managed a few good session on em but i've been using bloodworm for about 12 month and had 10 x 20lb+ fish and its not like i've been carp fishing every week either, a lot of my time has been spent targeting other species but if its carp i want then its bloodworm i buy

I had a batch of bloodworm from the social last year and it did ok for me but thought I'd try a new batch.
Have you used Quest before? I know they're not the biggest brand in the world but after looking about, they're not a small company by any means and at £11 a kilo i thought 3 for 2 was a steal.

I may well be wrong, though!

Thanks for the response Mark, it does instill a bit of confidence in what I've been doing and plan to do in the future Wink

Hi

Mark is bang on when he says don't skimp on bait and don't buy crap!

I have switched baits a few times - but i always insist on using a good quality foodbait - i reckon that carp will eat any decent foodbait.

i won't touch readymades [ though they have improved apparently - and i know lads did well on ready made trigga ice - nutrabaits].

I usually use a fishmeal and i buy in bulk [20 - 30 kilo] so end up paying £5 a kilo - if you can't do that then obviously you will pay a little more. Stick to one of the main dealers - Mainline, nutrabaits, premier or stickybaits buy freezer baits as these are really of a much better quality than readymades.

Cheers Mark, One question about flavours...

Which seasons require which bases?

Is it birdfood and sweet in the spring and fishmeal meaty for the summer? Or is it all irrelevent..

Every water is diferent Edd some things to think about It doesn't take much bait to catch carp in the winter right? Well in the winter months, because the temp is so low the oil thickens and can even become solid in the cold water so somthing with spices may be the better choice for winter fishing and a bright so they might just pick it up out of the what the hell is that. As it hots up baits with fishmeal and oil work better Edd

Brilliant. Thank you.

Been looking on tackle websites at frozen boilies and even buying 20kg is over £8 a kilo!

I know you make your own Stotty but where's a good place to get cheap, masterline/nutrabaits/stickybaits frozen boilies?

If anyone wants to jump in on an order to get them cheaper, let me know, too (obviously someone local)

Stotty, want to send up some CC4C? pay you £5 a kilo lol!

In all seriousness, if anyone is ever wanting to order some baits in bulk, and its what someone wanted to use, then it'd make sense to chip in for the order, you'll get far more bait for far less £££
Might be worth getting a thread put up when someone is thinking of ordering some Wink
Take a look here Edd: http://www.baitfeedonline.co.uk/ I ordered one of the buy 5k,get 5k free (cell dumbells),plus free delivery, got a load of pop-ups,glugged baits, about 5k of pellets, and some other stuff thrown in to the deal, for under £100 at the time.

Great link Tim!

I'll be having some of that for sure...

You can even get mixed packs 5kg of one flavour and 5kg of another so don't even need to agree on a flavour!

that's spot on - thank you
