Stret pegging

What is Stret pegging. This is a great method for fishing rivers with deepish runs close into the bank... It's also a brilliant technique for catching barbel and chub and carp on the river.

Remember to set the rig well over depth in order to form a bow in the line which helps hold the shot in place on the bottom and allows the float to lie flat.

I always prebait my chosen swim with mashed bread and mashed corn for a week or so before I do this. Shot your line no more than six inches from the hook. Baits can be anything you like. But corn or bread that matches the mash that has gone in over the week is the best.
Then Cast directly downstream - not against the current. Then Put the rod in to your rests with the tip angled upwards so line is held off the surface. Sit back and wait. You can also do a sort of trot through with it faster flowing waters you just inching your bait through the swim. Do this by lifting the float so that the shot dislodges on the bottom and trundles a few inches downstream. Drop your rod tip to hold it in this new position. Wait a couple of minutes and repeat until the entire swim has been covered. The point where you move the bait is when you should be ready for a bite and they are normally very fast bites it seems the moving bait is something they just don’t want to let go past them.

Just remember your float must lay flat or a taking fish will feel resistance. Your float must sit directly downstream of your rod tip - you can not stret peg on the far bank. Place your rod on rod rests to hold it steady and raise the front to keep the maximum amount of line off the surface. And last of all you can only stret peg with a float fixed by silicone at both ends.

Yet another informative post Paul, its a great technique, one which I used a lot over the late summer, for swims where I did't want to cause disturbance plumbing up, just set it well over what I guessed the depth to be, and away you go, most those chub I had not long back were on this method.
Cheers

Maybe give it a go for the barbel, Ive seen video's of people float fishing for them, so this is'nt massively different, just static float,no resistance.

Simply the best rig ever for Barbel.

Never spook em again with a tight line.

Works great with a feeder too. Wink

Also like sittin just above an outside bend & feelin a freeline bait through the swim ! Every bump from the bottom & every hitch has you on the edge !!! When the fish comes you still get that "shock" but instinct knows its real & you"re in ! Stret pegging 828501

New one to me that, looks like a good un but I have a couple of questions if i may?

how does the float react? If the fish picks up the bait, there will be a period of time where the float wont sink and as it's laying flat, it can't show a "drop back" bite either...

Hope I'm not being dumb asking for explanations...
Will the float duck under quickly, or are you looking for the float to sail away?
I assume the 6" hooklength is to create a quick response to a take.

The bite will either make the float slip away as normal ,but a upstreaming bite should make it stand up to attention then dip under....

Because there's no resistance, the takes are super confident. Stay near your rod if you're Barbeling!

This really is a top rig for any time of the year. But especially for big roach and chub in winter with a chunk of bread flake.

Spot on mate! Those chunky roach like it static.

Give it a go in June, you'll be surprised at the size of fish you'll catch Fishing 2
