three sets of trebels

I have not done it but is it wrong to use 3 trebels on a
dead bait rig i keep geting takes between the trebles I strike but miss
the fish im i making my rigs wrong

not sure exactly how your fishing but it sounds like there is something going wrong. both of your trebles should be in the same bait so i dont see how you can get a take between them!, take a photo of your rig and post it up and we'll have a look.

Now im not a pike angler (well not at the moment) but i would have thought that if the pike are attacking your bait but not getting hooked up could it be the distance between the two trebbles? Would closing up the gap between the trebbles eliminate this?? Or am i looking at it from a different angle

could be a load of things the way you mount your bait the size of bait the time you take to strike...

post up your rig and how you mount your bait (Nidge would have a field day with pictures of him mounting his bait)

BUT you do not need a 3 gang hook set up

Think you have hit the nail on the head there Simon, your trebles should be half the size of your bait, so if your using a 6" Roach then there should be 3" between trebles with the first being in the root of the tail and the second no more than half way up the bait.

As said get a pic up of the rig just to see if theres anything glaring

Not entirely on topic as such,but thought I'd highlight that although in no way illegal,it's not advised to be bait fishing for pike through the warm weather/summer. A pike will engulf a bait and have it in its stomach before you know it. If your indication is poor,your going to end up trying to remove trebles via the fishes A hole...
As already said,if you can get a picture of your rigs,and perhaps the size of baits you use as well,we can advise/assist you better that way

here goes three trebles is something you really rarely need and yes im aware of what im saying that there are times when three trebles are needed.

if any of you have fished big and i mean big lives then two size 8's are not much use.

However for ajust about every normal sized bait (up to lets say a foot of mackeral or herring) then two trebles are more than adeqaute

what i suspect is happening in your case is yo have a big gap between the hooks and small fish picking the bait up are causing you these problems

go on you know how big mine were from yorks net...

size queens. On the rig front though it sounds like jacks.

so to clarify, what jon is saying is that yes there may be occations where 3 trebles are needed but they are few and far between and not normally needed for day to day pike fishing. if you had a huge livey or even a real big dead (i know shane patterson wobbles with full lampray and 3 trebles) you may need 3 but for normal stuff 2 should be fine

i dont like big lives i was put in a position where i couldnt do anything else the trout lot who controlled the place insisted i only used fish caught on site be they ive or dead, the fish were in the 3-5lb range and i think we had about four roach that were of a nice bait size but they got nailed on the way in and never even saw a treble. it took us a few weeks but in the end we managed to get them to sell us 'seconds' for use as bait

have you ever tried rigging a 5lb rainbow as bait oh we also had a big tench which would have been to big even for mr williams as bait

Big lives. Howabout a 3/0 and a power gum loop in the back. Like the ET super rig. nailed everytime even when struck instantly, but thats the way we like it anyway, instant.

truthfully, i had never hears of that at the time i ended up using /0 sizes on 50lb wire, it did get so much easier when they started letting us buy a few smaller baits
