The Chod Rig Empty The Chod Rig

Post by Stotty Wed Sep 24, 2008 12:48 pm

Chod rig

This is a great rig if you’re fishing water for the first time and you don’t know what the bottom of the lake is like.

Is also great for fishing silty lakes ,then loosing weights in clips will happen ,you need to think about how to get past the silt problem or even the weed problem. This rig leaves the hook length free to float up the line and rest on top of soft silt /weeds etc.

By moving the helicopter section further up the lead core you create a rig where the lead can bury in the silt/ weed but the hook link is still presented above the layer of soft bottom and can settle nicely on the lakebed.

To keep this rig safe As long as the top bead can pass over any knots etc, the rig is safe. You don’t want the fish tethered to a lump of lead core and a weight.

Thanks to Jerry Hammond for sitting down and giving me the confidence to fish this rig I have caught a few carp on it since then.

If you cant be bothered to make it up your self you can get them reddy made. The Korda Helicopter/Chod Rig Leader is the most advanced helicopter set up available, which can be converted to the popular 'Chod Rig'

I guess you'd have be make sure you did'nt fish a pop up, as would'nt it float right up to the surface Question

no you can fish a pop up i do all the time Also fished with a balanced pop-up this allows the bait to settle gently whilst the long distance to the lead allows it to sink without affecting bait presentation.

So would this work with your standard boilie or would the weight of the boilie be counter productive??? or could i use it with a boilie and some plastic corn to make it a bit more buoyant ??

Post by billy barbel Wed Oct 07, 2009 4:16 pm

so this rig works then by moving the top bead up and down but how do you know the depth between the bottom of the silt and say 4 inches above the silt would it just not pull the pop up down into the silt??

i'm not certian but i think you would set your beads so the hooklength is a good foot or so away from your lead. giving the lead plenty of line to dig in (if needed) leaving your hookbait sat neatly on top

i never read it mate n i wouldn't know either. i would just take a guess n set it deeper than was needed. if you set it deeper the line should be layed quite flat on the bottom anyway????
i could be wrong, we'll see what stotty says when he logs in

I think it's very much a matter of trial and error, you will know by the smell of your bait if its been buried in the silt. A bait on top will be a lot less tainted.

The top bead should be set further up the lead core than the silt is in depth. So if you have say 2ft of silt then set the bead at 2.5 ft as said you will know if your rig is fishing when you bring it in. Also I never use a weight over 1.5oz on it but that s just me I have had them use the weight of a big weight to throw the hook before.
