catfish is something i realy want to get a decent one of. ive only ever caught 2, both in the same session and both about 3lb by accident when carping. hardly a good fight on carp gear but a nice surprise none the less. would love a bigger one tho. i dont know many places round here for cats tho. not with a realistic chance of catching one.

Had a few at Cudmore, Cheshire, Tara lake. I fish there quite often with lures, for the Pike and Perch. Prefer using my baitcaster and jerkbait rod, but lots of small fry about, so I have been using small ultralight lures, and can only cast them effectively, with a fixed spool reel and medium spinning rod. The small lures are definitely outfishing the larger pike lures at the moment, plus, they are getting me some HUGE Perch, up to 4lb. Didnt expect catfish, but had 3 last week from 8 - 15 Lb. Not huge, but great fun on spinning tackle. Some anglers wouldnt advise targeting them on lure tackle, But if its correctly balanced, you would be surprised what you can land on light-medium gear. In the past, I have had a few cats up to 37lb, That bigger one, on a small spinner,{ mepps aglia No 3 }, 30lb braid, and 10-30g beastmaster rod. I was surprised the standard treble, coped with it, but as a precaution, I change to extra strong trebles now, when I fish where Catfish are likely.
Not many target them with lures, especially in pike infested waters, but its worth it, especially at night, but obviously a lure with a lot of vibration and rattle is required. .................Go on.........I'll tell you my secret weapon.................Sebile onduspoon. Had some cracking results with this lure at night. It deserves enough confidence to use it exclusively, as long as you can stay awake. Lure fishing for cats can be more effective than livebaits, purely because of the water you can cover, and you dont get those irritating 'dropped runs'. Just use sensible tackle .
