rigs, 4- the pulley

Post by geejay on Sat Mar 15, 2008 10:26 am

the pulley rig, i've always got some of these in my wallet .

the original idea, i believe, was designed to fish a patternoster type snood but when a sizeable fish is hooked allow the lead to pulley up in line with the mainline, like a flowing trace, to help avoid the lead becoming entangled in rocks etc on the retrieve.
i like them because it gives a little lee way with snood length when useing a clipped down version.

components-
2x strong swivels, though 2 different sizes can be used.
a bead,
a lead link,
hook/s,
bait clip if desired. ( all of mine are clipped, so thats what i'll describe)

build-
rig body, shockleader material or stronger, approx 2-5ft.
snood material, stiffer the better to avoid tangles, 30lb- 60lb( i don't like fine lines for this rig, coz light lines tangle and for me, its aimed at big fish)

tie lead link to one end of the rig body + bait clip just above.
then thread a (the larger) swivel on to the line ( this is where the main line attaches)
then thread on a bead (big enough not to go through the eye of the slideing swivel)
tie the remaining swivel to the other end of the rig body.

you should now have a rig body with a swivel slideing between the lead and a fixed swivel who's knot is protected by a bead.
veiw top of rig body ( pic 1)
tie a snood to the end of the fixed swivel(if not a clipped down rig , length is unimportant.)
and a hook to t'other end.
if useing a bait clip when the hook is engaged the slideing swivel should rest gently against the stop bead.

if the slideing swivel stops short of the stop bead by 1 1/2 inches or so its no great problem but if this is the case then the snood will take equal pressure of the cast and light hooks will straighten or very light snoods may break or stretch .

too tired to type any more, knackered and off to bed, bye.

been playing about with this rig for next weekend, both just the pulley and a pennel pully. i figured i best learn to tie it before i get down in the cold wind on the pier.
it looks good, i cant wait to use it. hopefully ill get something other than a whiting or crab on it

this is some great info for me as i dont really know much about sea fishing rigs and always end up just using a 2 or 3 hook patternoster.
