The Blowback Rig
Afternoon all, Couldn't find a piece on this, so took the liberty of doing a thread...
I'm going to try it out this weekend and thought whilst I'm learning it, may as well share.
Fairly simple in itself, the blowback rig is one used to increase the hooking potential of your rigs.
As the carp "blows back" and spits out all the bait/gravel/mud, the rig ring allows the hair to cater for the ejection and moves in a more mobile manner which means the hook can have longer period of time to sink in.
It can be used with a pop up, bottom bait or critically balanced
What you need:
Size 8 Longshank hooks are preferred allowing greater movement of the ring
Small rig rings
Coated braid
Shrink tubing (optional but recommended)
Swivel.
Ok, so first take a length of the coated braid and remove a few inches of the coating for you to tie to the hook.
Tie your overhand hair loop as normal.
Slide on the rig ring to about 2-3 inches from the hair loop and secure with an overhand knot. (don't tighten the knot until you're happy with it's position)
Next up is to thread the hook through the ring ensuring the point of the hook is around the same height as the ring.
Tie the 6 or 7 turn knotless knot as normal to secure it in place.
Now's the time to put on the shrink tube if you're using it.
Slide it down until the tubing just covers the hook eye and steam it in place with a kink to aid the turning capability.
Finally, tie to your swivel and hey presto!

Re: The Blowback Rig
my favoured rig!
one thing i would add is...
put your bait on before tying the ring on and you'll always get the perfect hair length

Re: The Blowback Rig
Do you bother with a pop up and split shot or do you use bottom baits?

My Bait : DNA Baits
Re: The Blowback Rig
I use it only for pop ups really, just because I've found it works well for them and I find other rigs work better for bottom baits. I tend to prefer rig tube for bottom baits or just angled shrink tube
I tie the blow back rig with the bait on as well, to set the hair length
