Pics of some lures...advice needed please...

Post by naffa on Wed Mar 09, 2011 1:04 pm

Hi guys I've come across some lures and as I'm new to lure fishing I thought I'd ask for your advice on how to fish them and whether any of them are suitable for Pike fishing my local canal. Depth of the canals around here are 12 - 36 inches. I have tried foshing using these lures but I'm not sure I'm using them correctly.

Lure 1.

Using this lure I see that it floats and will go into the water when reeled slowly. I'm not sure on what depth its going to though?

Lure 2.

Again a floater, moves a lot in the water. Not sure what depth its ideal at or whether Pike will be attracted to it?

Lure 3.

Seems to dive fast and deep. I can really feel the action of this through the rod.

Lure 4.

Comments are the same as Lure 3 really.

If you can give me any help on how to fish these best then please do.

Thanks Nath drunken

The pike will hammer all three of them lures. Cast em out and crank them back, or twitch them, or crank and pause crank and pause. The bill on the front of the lures makes them dive, the longer and shallower the bill, the deeper the dive will be and visa versa. Nathan, what sort of gear are you using to cast em, rod, reel, line, wire trace etc.

Hi Craig thanks for the reply. I'm using a 9ft Masterline Wanderer rod, Daiwa 4 ball bearing reel, 30lb braid and trace.

I have caught a few pike with this setup including 10, 12 and 14lber's but I've caught them all on rubber baby Pike lures weighing 30 - 35g.

Tbh I just want to have a good try with a different type of lure to the rubber ones which you just seem to cast and reel in almost as soon as they hit the water.

Thanks Nath

Sorry I just realised I have posted the same pic twice for lure 3 & 4.
Here are another 2 that I should have put pics of earlier.

Nowt wrong with that setup. The first is another deep diver.all the lures with the bills are known as crankbaits, or plugs if you like.
All you need to do with the last one is crank it in after letting it sink to the required depth. You can add pauses or taps just like the rest of the plugs really. don't be afraid to use the deep divers on shallow venues either. The deep divers tend to have a tight wiggle whereas the shallow divers have more of a lazy wobble. A good book to buy would be "catch pike with lures". A modern book that covers all lure types.

So a crankbait is simply something that you reel (crank) in?

When you pause reeling these in do they rise slowly to the surface?

I had noticed the difference in the actions of these plugs as I tried them out and the difference in feel through the rod is very noticable.

Mirror what Craig says really, they will all catch on there day, its knowing what to use in which situation that takes time to learn.
I think the top one is a Hi-Low if I am not mistaken, the cranks look like mag Rapalas and Baqgley Bombers and they have a good pedigree.

Crank/Plugs is what I started lure fishing with when I first started and I did really well on them, crank em down then slow the retrieve right down with a few pauses, this will keep the lure in the strike zone for much longer giving the Pike the oppertunity to strike. Rapala Super Shad Raps really do take some beating Wink

top ones a hi-lo copy (i have one, not chucked it yet though)

naffa if the lure floats initially before the retrieve then yes it will rise when you stop the retrieve

I thought HI-LO's has adjustable diving vanes. The top one is very like the old River Runt. That's the sum total of my lure knowledge, lol.
