Fodding (yes 'fodding')

Post by richcherr on Mon Feb 07, 2011 8:14 am

this is something i do and wondered if anyone had tried this for general still water bream / carp fishing? it worked well for me last year. its only something daft so be kind.

basically i turn up at the fishery and before i do anything else i set up my feeder and sleeper rods, both rods with a cage feeder or small lead tied (even a granny knot) to the end (nothing else). i then choose the spots i like the look of or where i can see fish feeding and cast to it with an empty cage feeder or small lead until i have got the right distance and far bank mark and then clip up. i then start 'spodding' my groundbait or pellet mix out, maybe 3 - 6 feeders. i then set up my gear (20 - 30 mins and fag and tea) then lastly just snip the feeders of and replace with a carp rig on the sleeper rod and feeder rig on the other. by this time even if the fish did get spooked they are usually back feeding and i dont have to keep recasting so often to get a bed of bait down.

it has the added benefit (with me anyway) that i dont rush to get set up (badly) and get a rig in the water as i am confident that i have bait out accurately already. the cage feeder doesnt seem to make so much disturbance either.

silly stuff but i might work for someone else as well (without the expense of spodding gear).

cheers

i do a similar thing. first thing i will do is mix up the groundbait so it can soak up the water while i get the rest of my stuff ready (especially good with pellet based mix's cos they ALWAYS need more water adding) then ill just set up the feeder rod with just the feeder im planing on using and chuck out a few times depending on how much bait i want out there. i dont like clipping up so i find this is also a good way to gauge the distance for the rest of your casts aswell as get some bait down. then its time to get comfy and set the rest of the stuff up and put a proper rig on.

a few diferences but all in all the same sort of approach, its not as silly as you may have thought......

OK...

I will cast out a feeder every couple of minutes for at least an hour regardless of bite ...

then depending on the action slow down to 10-20mins ...

so similar to above... but always have a hook... cause you just never know
