topwaters i have to add this bit as i need at least ten charecters to post the bleedin topic

Post by noodle on Mon Mar 08, 2010 5:46 pm

topwaters

with all the various types from doggers (hmphh hmphh) sorry walk the dog types to crawlers and prop things

any views on em

ive only ever caught one pike on them and that was on a topwater (ace medic i think) that had sunk a few inches below the surface, and seeing as i have about two boxes full of the things form american hardwoods dunwright pete mania bucher poes fox daiwa.....

any suggestions.

main reason for asking is ive just bought a few rather expensive ones form the land of the rising sun imakatsu husky hasuzzy and the smaller confunazzy along with a daiwa dead or alive

and i want to catch on em

I have a few like your self the only one I have had a strike on is the frog one a mate brought back from the good old USA. It has a weed guard and you can drag it over lilies I had a jack snatch at it last year and frankly I was so shocked I forgot to strike thatís about as good as it gets from me.

But then again Iím not the die hard piker like some of you lads.

I have had a good few fish on topwater lures and there are a few things to remember.

I think the lure type makes very little difference, prop baits, dog walkers and apddle lures all have there day but i think how you use them is more important.

First thing to remember is that braid is best for surface lures, the strike has to be just right and the none stretch helps with this. 60 yard casts with topwaters I have found to be hard to hook so try fishing along the margins first of all and then work out into open water, dong get me wrong I have had takes in 25ft of water but more me the shallower the better is a good rule of thumb. Now a point that people sometimes miss is the cast, first of all cast your bait out and let all the rings from the splash fade away, any Pike will see and hear the lure hitting the water from 30-40 yards away and strating the retrieve straight away will not give some of these fish chance to come and have a look. Now that the rings have settled give the lure a quick pull and stop again, most takes will come from the first few turns of the handle so beware of early takes, I have always used a similar retrieve for all my surface fishing and thats 5 turns of the handle, a pause and a further 5 turns of the handle.

The take from surface lures is the best bit, it can range from a small pluck to an almighty crash and a Pike clearing the water by 3ft but the most important thing to remember is to wait for the fish to turn before you strike, most fish will hook themselves but if you do have to strike then make sure the Pike has turned. Now Pike are not the best at striking at these baits and you will see 50% of takes will miss the bait altogether, if this happens pause the retrieve for a few seconds and start the retrieve again becasue chances are the Pike will come back for more. i hope this helps you out John, as with sppinnerbaits the more times you use them the more consistant you will become with them. Top thread.

since my earlier post i have been devouring anything lure related ...........i just can't wait for the weather to turn so that i can try and catch a fish on a surface lure.

Lunchtime today i was looking at a fox Nemesis - decent option or crap??

the topraider from bucher ive seen em go for 3 quid on fleabay, if you search for jerkbaits on ebay you should come some by a seller called fishing pool teh baits will all be ACE but sold as a joblot to make way for new stock

actually heres the lure well 3 of em for 14 quid to your door

tell me about it the lad i do most of my lure fishing with is my student lol!

same age as me just far newer to lure fishing and if i took three lures of him he would probably catch bugger all pike

he uses a homemade pull bait similar to dave greenwoods big dipper
a fox repilicnut
and a spinnerbait

he cant catch on glides or any of the other lovely types out there

but with those three he usually manages to take three or four pike to my one Fish Slap

today though i did him, well almost we didnt catch any but i had three hits off tiny pike to a manta. one was so small it held on to the lure between the hooks while i lifted it out of the water LMAO
