Oddball baits, Currents, sultanas and raisens??? Empty Oddball baits, Currents, sultanas and raisens???

Post by Plumby Tue Mar 23, 2010 5:42 pm

Hi all

I\'m just considering trying out sultanas, raisens and currents for hookers.

My rationale is - they are soft, hookable, sweet and natural. Also, they are just basically dried fruit, and many fish take falling berries so it\'s got to be worth some testing.

I find roach like both extremes of sweet and spicy, so they are a good test bed species for new baits. I fish a lake with good shoals of roach, so a try on the whip with maggots usually gets them in a frenzy. Then I can test the raisens etc on the hook once they are competing.

Has anyone tried them, or heard of them being used?

I can envisage Tench, Carp, Chub, Roach, Crucians and even Barbel taking these.

They come in a range of sizes, and colour shades so there would be many presentation options.

What does the forum think?

Also, Roach enjoy sweet baits and I love lumpy Roach.......

Thanks for the replies. Sorry Dave, I just don't know how to navigate a simple forum, forgive my incompetance with technology.

I'll give them a try and see how we fare in a few weeks if the weather shows us a warmer front.

Shame I've still got to do my electrics at home this weekend.

Should have done them weekend before last, but dodged out at 5am for the last day of the season on the Dane, and then again this weekend at a local stillwater.

No chance this weekend, I've got to get this job done...... Wink Ohhh Small Violin

Have caught on Elderberry & Sultana Oddball baits, Currents, sultanas and raisens??? Icon_wink
When used Sultana, i had made "Waldorf" ? Type salad, the night before. You know the type of thing.... Lettuce,Cucumber,Tomato,Potato,Celery,Peanuts,Mayonaise & of course Sultana. When the mix has sat in the fridge over night, the Sultanas swell up,absorbing the mayo & juices. So just that one time i used a few & had Small Carp on them.. So i suppose you could soak them in a "juice" of your choice, or even plain water.
Had forgotton about this, will have to experiment too Oddball baits, Currents, sultanas and raisens??? Icon_wink

It’s a lot like the Lake Escapes with Matt Hayes when he caught the carp on a whole hair rigged strawberry. At the end of the day carp will eat most things meat, fruit, nuts etc and being something different could give you a little edge.

Thanks for the info!

I hadn't thought about the fruit swelling up. Glad you mentioned this for fish care reasons.

I'll measure the "coefficient of expansion" for the various fruit types, and pass on the results.

Now this is what I call "Technical bait development" Mexican Wave

to near enough healdys words "carp dont have hands so if something intreages them they have to check it out with thier mouths" which makes them that little bit easier to catch

Quote "carp dont have hands so if something intreages them they have to check it out with thier mouths"

Very true.

When touch ledgering for Barbel, Chub etc,, hitting those plinks that travel up the line often result in fish that you would otherwise not have struck at when using a tip to indicate.

If you can get them to test a bait, then you can catch em. Oddball baits, Currents, sultanas and raisens??? 198200
