scouring/toughening worms for the hook?

Post by richcherr on Thu Sep 24, 2009 11:20 am

Hello all,

does anyone have any tried and tested methods for toughening worms (lobs) for the hook? i have tried moss (but i'm not sure i did it right) and also Isaac Walton's method of mixing moss with brickdust. this just killed them, i dont think there were many chemicals in 17th Century bricks. any advice would be great.

cheers rich c

ive never tried it with worms but maybe substituting brick dust for sand may work? scratch would toughen them without drying them out.
on the rare occasion i want to toughen my maggots up i use sand

you could try damp sawdust and sand mixed. normally i would hook the lob worm through the saddle and use a small piece of elastic band nicked on to the hook after the worm to hold it in place. this should hold the worm on for good length of time.if im useing redworms i tip them with a maggot to stop them coming off.

Toughening worms or otherwise known as conditioning.. the best way I have ever known for doing this is by wrapping the worms in damp newspaper and leaving them like it for 2 weeks.. periodically changing the paper etc...

they become a lot tougher and somewhat bigger.. scratch
