When fishing a new water how do you choose your chosen rig what helps you decide

"right thats the rig i'm going to use " ???

Well for me when i visit a new water the thing's i think about before altering my rig's is depth of the water because the deeper the water the darker it will be down there, if it's shallow then i'm going to be thinking about camouflaging my rig so it blends in to the shallow surroundings along the bottom, once i've established the depth i'l be fishing i'll then check to see if it's weedy in the swim if it's weedy i'll choose a longer hooklength and maybe think about popping a bait up off the bottom, if it's not weedy i'll think about shortening my hooklength and scaling it down ie my hooks, bait and maybe leads just to minimize resistance and leave a shorter length between the fish and the lead so when it picks up my bait and try's to swim away with it it's hooked in seconds "literally" for this i'd choose a bolt rig a bolt rig is basicly a fixed lead (but safer) it's attached to a safty clip and should the line break the lead will always come free so the fish doesn't trail the lead and line which would probably end in the carp's fate, getting back to keeping the "minimum resistance" a running rig is the best for achieving this and a running rig is in a nut shell the line through the eye of the lead and is stopped from coming over the eye of the hook by a stopper bead and this does give "minimum resistance"

Now the baiting end of any rig is vital you obviously want your bait to be secure to your rig how you attach it is a personal choice i think some people choose to hair rig it and attach it with a boilie stop and some others choose to attach it by using a "D" rig a "D" rig give's your hook bait 360 degree manoeuvrability and is most carp angler choice mainly because of the amount of movement it gives you and by adding either foam or artificial corn, pellet or grubs you can make critically balanced which means your hook bait in the water is lighter but not too light so that it floats up towards the surface and when carp suck this critically balanced bait up it's so light it go's towards the back of the throat and when they feel the hook coming through they spit it out and hook themselves, an excellent technique for any carp angler and should definatly be stored in there armoury .

so what do you look for ?

please feel free to add to any of this this has been written as a guide

My imput will probably be not too good as I am so new to carp fishing, but I would alays try and suss out what the bottoms like, heavy leads with a small surface area are poor on silty bottoms so I would choose a chod rig or a method with a semi popped up bait. I have not tried z rigs yet so I cant comment on them however know Kev raves about them so thats good enough for me to try one next year Wink

On a new water if I was to throw out one rig while I get my act together I would definitely throw out a chod rig. It is a good all round rig that can sit and catch in weed and if you’re using a single hook bait i.e. a high viz pop up I would say its spot on.

As for all this talk I am gagging to get out carp fishing again it’s been far to long for me as you know I love all fishing but I do love my carp fishing.

New lakes the best advise is keep it simple and keep your eyes open for fish if you see them rolling and you cant cast to them move.
