jerkbait rod and reel needed ...... advice please

Post by stingray on Wed Apr 02, 2008 5:15 pm

just snapped my rod down the canal ....thought I'd hooked into a biggie and was tightening into it with a nice bend on the rod when SNAP !!! . So I need a new one . That one was 6' Ron Thompson Axellerator Jerk ( casting 50g to 120g ) . I've been reading that longer rods are now the vogue ..... up to 8'6"
a mate ( woodchucker ) recommends a Pete Maina One Piece 6' 6" teamed with a shimano cardiff and 80lb braid . I've already decided on 100lb braid following expert advice ( thanks kippy slipper ) and my reels at the moment are Abu 5001c and Abu Ambassadeur 7000 . The reels are in mint condition ( a gift from my father who bought them in the 70's ) . while the 5001c is a dream to use i think it's time perhaps to retire both reels as too good to break . So I am looking to start afresh when i 've saved up again ...... just bought the Bradford No 1 book with all my spare cash .
Any advice would be greatly appreciated as to what to buy . Ohhh Small Violin Ohhh Small Violin Ohhh Small Violin Ohhh Small Violin Ohhh Small Violin

Do you have to pay money to fish Bradford No1, I thought it was free fishing Innocent Whistle Innocent Whistle

Nash are doing a 6'6" jerkbait rod at the moment Sean, and I am hearing good things, might be worth a go Union Jack

ian recommended the nash one piece ( if i want a one piece ) but he reckons the grey's two pieces are his favourites as they replace the rod if you smash it . That last two piece was a pain as i was always having to realign the rings and as you pointed out it was a bit on the short side ( couldn't tuck in under your elbow when playing a fish ) . I will be looking into all suggestions before buying . i read on Pete Maina site that he is now using 8'6" rods , what are your views on this , Ady ?

I do prefer a one piece rod Sean they just seem stronger to me, as far a 8ft+ rods, I just think that its a bit too long, casting on river banks in the summer is hard enough with overhanging trees, a longer rod will not give you any andvantage while fishing on rivers and canals only when fishing large lakes from the bank or from a boat Wink
Come down to mine one night and I will let your borrow Pete for a couple of days and that might help you make your mind up Cool Smoking

Stingray....... our fladen rep reckons this is a cracking rod, i would give the reel a miss in this particular combo though its been designed for fladen by gord burton.

the woodchucker has loaned me his Pete ....... " use it and abuse it " he said " it'll help you to make the right decision ...... "
Now this is over and above the role of mod , mate , .......
thank you pig face ( a nod there in the direction of badger who don't like Kiss My Ass )
no but seriously WC you are a wonderful man to know Mexican Wave Mexican Wave Mexican Wave
so far he's given me tuition , a landing net ( when i cut mine up to free a pike ) , several lures ,loan of books and DVD's and now the loan of a world class rod ( i've done my homework Wink ) , and once while piking , i nearly died ..... when i asked WC for help he finished sorting his rods and then sorted mine and promptly pumped my baits out into the middle of the lake ....... I sat there happy as .....even though i felt that these were my last minutes here ..... just watching him totally engrossed in helping me and not realising that i was in my death throes . I needed a fooking ambulance you pike obsessed c**t lol!
