I'm no more of an expert than you. My advantage is knowing about fish, not tackle.

You can have the best tackle in the world, but poke it in the wrong place and it's worthless. I still use the same gear I did in the 80's. For all fish, not just pike.

wise words

my gear is mostly cheapo stuff ( ok some isnt or shouldnt be but i got it cheap so it counts as cheap)

reels are all big reels around the 40-50 mark from daiwa and penn (original surfmaster/carpmaster you wont find a bettter reel this side of the tournament daiwas)

rods fox pikers 50 notes again 3.25
ah 2.75 ultegra carp rod in2.75
and er ok a bit ott nut 13 ft 3.5 fa shimano aero specialist tha cost about 40 notes second hand but for drifter fishing to 300 metres and putting small baits and big leads out is fantastic even crap caster could hit big distances with this kind of rod all bar the 13 loaded with 50lb (towrope) daiwa sensor braid oh the 2.75 is loaded with 50lb penn dyneema in royal blue colour and the 13 has 40lb power pro for drifting and 44lb antares braid for casting it has slightly lower diameter and is softer than most so cast exceptionally well

alarms well im still on the old optonics (never bettered yet including delks) and original eddie turner drop offs at the back

the cord alarms ive mentioned elsewhere well pop to the local pound land and buy one of the alarms they sell all you need to do is make the switch inside work in reverse ( apivot point is easy to det up with a spring to pull the switch tight then tie some braid to the end of the lever and add a head of you choice

thats right a bite alarm for a quid
oh its 90 dcb too

i havnt even started on the crap i used to have to use daiwa sensor rods silstar fx 40's i dodged them and ended up with a huge EX 60 and a cough cough woolworths winfield reel i think ive still got one of my old reels upstiars a shakespere ez cast that held about 150 m of 12lb mono

I'm the wrong side of 40 too and have no idea about tackle. (EX60 and T72 mean nothing to me?) The only bit's of kit I would recomend are reels! Mitchel match, shimano sea spin baitrunner and abu 6501c3. After that it's line and hooks, and then bait, lures are bait.

grew out of the big gudgeon thing when i moved back to st helens (lived on the ribble for a bit) and i have the odd go on a local river that has em in (no success yet)

Im predominantly a predator fanatic and more so when it comes to trying to catch oddities on lures carp on lures are a little two seasons ago now im after a roach/rudd on some little (1-3gm) lures ive made this year. I almost accidentally caught some last year but all the roach were doing was headbutting the lure was amazing to watch though
