stingray wrote:one thing i noticed yesterday on the " lumpy canal " was that with that shimano reel you've nowhere to rest your thumb ..... it started aching after a couple of hours and after what woodchucker posted ( i saw him in the tackle shop returning what must have been the 12th reel yesterday afternoon ) I don't care how smooth the reel is I'll stick with the Abu's . These Abu's my dad gave me are entering their second decade of use , with a 30 year gap between the decades , they have never been serviced apart from the cleaning and oiling my old man gave them after every session and they are in MINT condition .
Ian , my 7000 reel is a right hander , it was my dad's favourite pike lure reel and he only bought the 5001c because he had some follows from serious perch and so decided to target them as well as the pike .....in your opinion , is the 7000 of any use in today's pike angling ? .....it seems very heavy and has the wing nut fixings i'd associate with a boat reel . I'm looking at it now and when i say mint ......it looks like it has just been delivered and never ever used but i know my dad used it for the best part of 10 years scratch

giving something away about myself here lol

if it works who cares what it looks like or what others think

unless any experienced trollers out there would car to recomend any?

I got all of them try be more specific about size and stuff. I have boxes and boxes full, not so many out and out trolling lures but some. Throw some "wish I had's" at me.

ah well you got me there ive got one of each so far to see how they work a depthraider shallow raider 6" jake
i would like here goes around four or five lures as back ups to casting baits that will work roughly between 10-30 feet on the trout waters i know the ultimate depth will depend on speed and braid out/ diameter

my aim is to find two or three patterns and buy three of each in various colours. for the deeper running lures obvious choice was the depthraider, and im trying to get my hands on an ernie to see which suits me more.
for shallower running lures the choice is frightening jake grandmas, zalt, zam, beleivers the list is endless so far ive managed to pick up off ebay for a fiver a jake, then a brand new depthraider, and shallow raider for 16 quid
ive things like the magnum by rapala, big mac by storm salmo sinking jack, rapala sliver (dont laugh please it was bought very early on)and some big old cranks from harris (half price offer of the day Embarassed )

but for trolling im truly clueless hence why ive gone for the obvious choices

ok fair point ive a decent idea of my way around lures that id cast from boats or the bank all of those i mentioned you can do that with, the area im after increasing my knowledge of them is trolling lures as a method to cover water with a fair bit more speed id like to be able to fish lures at the same time, covering two depth bands which i have found to be fairly productive for me and they are 10-15 ft and 25-35 feet ive caught fish deeper and shallower but for me these are the depths to target on most of the big waters ive fished

now i dont own a boat and am reliant on hire boats on the trout waters so im a mere mortal in that sense which is were my ignorance comes in i have sod all knowledge of what lures will do when being towed behind the various craft i end up un that have motors ranging from 44lb thrust electrics to 5 horse petrol ones

to be honest what youve said applied to me only a few years ago ive bought some crap in the intermittent period as witnessed by my two junior shallow invaders a few weeks ago

now if you want some one to talk bait fishing with im on home turf there

Noodle,

I have a big ernie in perch, a "sinking" depth raider in yellow & gold (nice Wink ) Or if you wanna BIG trolling lure I have a 10" nilsmaster invinceable, or a 11" jake. I don't boat fish so you are going to have to tell me whats good for trolling. All the abouve I've read are up to the job. Also have other things with mahoosive diveing lips.

Theres nothing clever about a KISS, learn about the fish.

I'm no more of an expert than you. My advantage is knowing about fish, not tackle.

You can have the best tackle in the world, but poke it in the wrong place and it's worthless. I still use the same gear I did in the 80's. For all fish, not just pike.
