You told me the tip was missing/damaged! It could be as noodle says, a swing tip! On a swing tip rod there is a tip section that funnily enough "swings to indicate a bite! That could be why there is no tip ring. I think they just push on like the other section and you could probably find another to fit if you took it to a good enough tackle shop!

I have a 3 piece Shakespear rod I bought years ago. 1 top section is quiver the other has an end eye for a swing tip to screw into. I think they fizzled out due to the simplicity of quiver tip rods and they almost definately had you in a few taggles around the rod tip as the tip bounced all over the place when casting. It's hard to know if you've got a bite when the wind is blowing the thing all over the place.

I have seen one of those Dave, I saw a lad using one to fish the river....looked very strange..and he was bagging
