Did you know............
That elvers are young eels, around 7cm in length. They take upto 20 years to reach maturity. They spend at least a year drifting across the atlantic ocean in the gulf stream before swimming up rivers to find a suitable place to live and grow. When they mature, they return to the sea and swim across the atlantic to spawn south west of Bermuda. The environment Agency are currently working on various stocking projects to put eels where they can no longer reach by themselves to try and boost our flagging eel population.

I thought they lived in the North Pole with Santa!

Life is what you make it, so it's your own fault!

One of the reasons that eels are becoming rare is due to the import of eels from Japan. Some of these have escaped. They carry a parasite to which our eels have no immunity. The parasite affects the swim bladder damaging it so badly that when returning to spawn the eel cant get to the depths required.
