Spodding

Korda Skyliner Spod what i am using at the mo. Wink

Mini Spod

Basically spodding is using a spod or bait rocket to put out your bait to a further distance and a tighter distance than could be achieved by catapulting single food items, It also gives you the advantage of delivering particle baits I.e. hemp in quantities and accuracy 2nd to none.

You should have a separate spod rod, theses are a very strong rod, a proper spod rod will have a test curve of 4lb + but as I have stated before the new mini rockets you can get can be cast out on a 2.5lb test curve but for a large fully loaded spod cast at distance you will require the real deal. This should be coupled with a large reel something that can hold a good amount of line what’s the point of having a set of rods that can cast to the horizon and a spod set up that can’t get to were you want your bait.

I use braid on my spod set up because it has a very fine diameter to breaking strain making it great for casting, but I do use a mono tapered shock leader this gives it a little bit of stretch . (Also ware a glove if you get your finger caught in the braid with a full spod you could be kissing that finger good bye.
shock leader knot
I have used loads of fancy knots this one is the best its simple and has never let me down

Purpose designed single glove for spod casting. Features double skin leather index finger and padded anti-slip palm. Ideal for all braid users and big casters including sea anglers.

The spod is just clipped on to the end of your line simple as that.

So you have your marker rod out SEE> Marker rod link and you want to hit that, if you require any extra weight to reach the marker I simply add water to the spod. Then cast at your marker. When I am happy with the accuracy of my cast, clip the line on to the reel clip on the side of the spool (this is why I like the mono shock leader I have seen people shear the old ones off with the braid as it has no give) Next reel the spod in & cast to the marker again, this will 100% check that its spot on.

Get you self set up with the bucket next to you I normally stand it on my bivy table to I don’t have to bend too much. If you have a light spod mix then as before with the empty spod add some water to give it some extra casting weight and stability in flight. This is then cast out as the nose of the spod is made of foam; the nose pops up and empties your bait. When you get into a rhythm
You can empty a large bucket in no time.

good info once again paul

just to add a tip to it paul

alot of times when spodding just particles or pellets you get some fall out (you,ll here it called spod washings) to stop this a little trick i now employ is to add a stone on top of the particle or pellet in the spod this reduces the amount lost during flight greatly and if you find the right size stone to zero, the stone falls out before getting to your marked spot aswell

note: you can normally only due this if the swim you are fishing is stoney

kevin

You want to be looking at something with a bit of back bone to cast a large heavy spod out! Something with about 5.5lb test curve! A nice big pit reel with a good braided line. If you use a good heavy shock leader then you can get away with lighter line and should be able to cast further!
Life is what you make it, so it's your own fault!

I suppose it depends how far you are chucking the spod and how big it is! You should go for a rod that is designed for spodding. 4lb test curve upward should do.

Hi if you want a proper spod rod it has to be over 3lb TC I use a 3lb TC rod as I don’t used huge spods but when I go with one of my mates and we have to put a load out we use his and it makes a huge difference. As I said in the above article it should be 4lb or over

2 I would go for cheap end

SPOD ROD 12ft 4½lb from E.S.P get in on line for about £70

Greys Spod Rods - Standard Spod 12' from Greys £99 but have seen it on eBay for £80 but you have P&P
