Ready to target bigger Carp, advice please
Hello guys,
as mentioned in my Blogg about my visits to reepham fisheries, i have been catching carp up to 4LB.
i have 2 bait runner reels one with 10lb line one with 15LB line, but its a max 10lb line fishery.
my rod is a specimen rod.
please can you give me the run down where to go from now, what size hook, hook length, hair rig, method etc.
as told to me that i will get less and less carp as soon as i target the bigger fish.
i am happy that there are a hell of a lot of big fish there and see the guys catch them all the time.
sweetcorn is catching big time, the bloke aposite was using bread close in to the margins and getting the big ones.
i have confidence i have the rod n reel to land one so now all i need is the tackle to catch them
i have used sz 16 & 18 barbless so far on 3 & 4lb line, i dropped down to sz 20 but no luck.
a fella give me sz 12 carp feeder hooks but i don't know if this was correct.
any help would be really appreciated.

Re: Ready to target bigger Carp, advice please
I think it's hard to give an individual opinion or advice because carp anglers all vary their rigs, baits ect,I my self have a wallet full of different hooklengths so I can pretty much determine which one to use when I get there,Braid,Fluro carbon,Amnesia some hairs, some made with maggot ring's,some with pellet bands and just plain hairs for boilies,I also use 15lb mainline to method feeder because I hate spodding,as for hooksize I also vary that too from size 10 Nash fang barbless to size 6 Korda wide gape barbless,I also hate to use barbed hooks whether the fishery allows it or not,This is al just personal opinion alot of my carp fishing was learned via trial and error.

This is what I always preach what can take one water apart will not catch a thing at another. It’s down to how much theses fish are fished for size of the water, the sort of lake bed even is it hot cold all this plays a part.
If it’s runs water I would not use anything more than 10lb main line 8-10lb hook link size 10 hook a drilled pellet on the hair and a small pva bag of matched pellet this normally works well on theses commercial type fisheries.

Then again you can never go far to wrong with good old corn but if its full of silver fish they normally pick it of so one grain of rubber is a good idea.

Re: Ready to target bigger Carp, advice please
cheers guys,
been itching to get back from work n have a look on the site./
i do understand how hard it is for a experienced fisherman to give me advice on what to do, but Stotty you have given what a lot of my m8's have advised,i'll go for 10lb main 8LB hooklength, and i can grab some size 10 hooks (take it size 12 Carp feeder hooks)and make some hair rigs.heard a lot about PVA bags.
well happy,
thanks guys

keep it simple keep it all pined to the floor

Re: Ready to target bigger Carp, advice please
or the chaep option and once again i have knocked this up on the quick at the side of the bank before and it catches it is a simple run rig but i do like having the tube on the line not only does it pin the line down it protects the fish.

Re: Ready to target bigger Carp, advice please
I can vouch for the 2nd rig,it's so simple and takes literally a couple of minutes to tie and it does catch,I use this when I feel the fandangled rigs dont work for me,this just proves that newer rigs can be over rated, just keep it simple.
Re: Ready to target bigger Carp, advice please

Re: Ready to target bigger Carp, advice please
Hook size, I find has nothing to do with the lb of line! It depends on what you are after and what bait you are using! A single grain of corn would look silly attached to a size 6 hook. If I was fishing Pellet as we have discussed before then I would go for no bigger than a size 8 hook and probably would go with a size 12 with a 8lb hook length. But hey.... I'm no expert! Big fish have big mouths and take big baits that would be OK on a size 6 hook. But they also take small baits too and finding the right balance between hook size and bait size could mean the difference between catching and blanking!
Life is what you make it, so it's your own fault!

Badger has it spot on I caught my 40 on a size 6 hook if you look at my blog I had a 17 lb fish the other day on a single 10mm boilie that was on a 10lb hook link with a size 10 hook just make sure they are strong carp hooks not thin match hooks as they can bend straight if your using a heavy rod. I have had carp to 20lb on 6lb line on a rod that bends well. Its all about matching the tackle you can’t run heavy line through light rods light hooks on heavy rods and light line on heavy rods.Re: Ready to target bigger Carp, advice please
