So it's no different than using a "Dog biscuit" fly for Carp then! Suspect I can see what Gaz means though if you are using a float then it's not real fly fishing is it?
Life is what you make it, so it's your own fault!

its not fly fishing at all, it accounts for 90% of deep hooked trout barbless or not and its supposed to imitate daphnia which is a natural foodsource for trout and that big mess just doesnt look natural nor is it fished naturally.

What a load of pish, we are fishermen and if you want to catch fish you will use every method possible, thats like me saying that we should ban live baits for pike fishing as its cheating Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad[/quote]

i agree, fishing is hard enough with current issues!! we mostly all fish 4 the same reason... 2 catch fish and spend quality time on the water! there is no need 4 the purist snobbery!

yeh i love the art of fly fishing and cant beat WILD fishing with traditional flys, but on man made waters that are over stocked anyway, i cant see wot all the fuss is! christ i use flys 4 pike that are 9inches long! not exactly traditional dry fly is it but i hav just as much fun making the fly as i do fishing it!

Purists argue that blobs, which are permitted in major contests, give an unfair advantage over conventional methods and make trout fishing too easy. England fly-fishing champion Chris Ogborne was so opposed to them that he left the England team, and says he has received hundreds of letters of support

chris believes that it is a unfair advantage in a match...... well surely thats the point of a match, the best man/woman win!! as long as these lures are legal then the old schoolers cant complain and should just get on with it!! its like the boiley vs the good old natural bait in carp fishing.... fair enough if such a bait is banned from the water, but if not then if ya cant beat them join them i say. progression is the key here, the sport would just fester if it was left to the old school/purists!!

Look at modern Piking, both me and Woody can vouch for what the likes of yanky baits and braid hav done to the sport!! i for one would not have the piking CV i have today if it wasnt for people moving forward in the sport and i am at the top of the game here in mid-devon and always open to learning new things everytime i leave for the water. dont get me wrong i am a purist at certain areas of my game and take great pleasure out of doing things right! but ill continue to support the guys who want to improve angling in this country weather it be Purist or a little off centre...... but thats what makes anglers such a good bunch, and hope others can gain from mine and others experiences

I agree with what your saying about moving sport forward danny, but these things dont imitate a fly or insect and make it so easy that in my opinion its not sport, i grew up fishing traditional casts of flys and always looked at the bigger flies as being more like lure fishing thats just my opinion.

The piking changes in the last few years still support the basic theory that a lure imitates a small/large fish and triggers a take, my point being that blobs dont really imitate anything and trigger such an aggressive take that it can damage fish. Also the yank way of lure fishing with the jerk rods etc is very exciting for lure anglers and is catching on at a rapid rate, I think there will always be a division on this subject between those who fish for sport and those who just want to go to their local pig pond and kill loads of fish in a 4 hour session for the table, and the way i see it the competitions need to be competitive and have rules about these things or we will just end up with the guys at the pinnacle of our sport setting a bad example to the kids coming through the lower ranks of the national and regional teams, technically with a blob anyone could fish for their country as they take very little skill to use.

And for the reord im all for developments in any field of angling be it techniques or tackle but it has to be for the right reasons.

Maybe im just an old stuck in the mud fluff chucker but if blobs are the future of fly fishing then im buying a bait boat Wink

lol!

Yeh i totally agree mate, the BLOB is NOT a "fly" and in traditional fly fishin it doesnt fit in..... but untill actions such as banning it take place then its fair game. take the spinnerbait!! there is a thread on the pred page, thats not a traditional fish/bait lure but it fits in now with lure anglers.... it once didnt and allot of anglers didnt take to it strate away, now its a big part of coloured water angling. mayb its cuz im a lure angler only that i dont see the problem but where do u see fly fishing going in the next ten years?? im certain there will b more and more garish big flys running the scene, love them or hate them there here to stay.... but lets not 4get where the roots of the sport started, as long as we still no that then we cant go wrong
