Proposed byelaws to regulate fish removal by rod and line
well lads you say a lot about it now's your time to have your say
The law that governs fish removal, particularly of coarse fish, is unclear and limited. We want to hear your views on proposed new byelaws to regulate what fish can be removed under what circumstances.
the problem is its now closed BUT looks like there doing somthing about it at last
http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/research/library/consultations/108764.aspx
but it looks like the proposing new byelaws to regulate fish removal will be-
We are proposing new byelaws that will limit what coarse fish can be taken from rivers, streams, drains, canals and certain large stillwaters, and in what circumstances. We do not propose to restrict what coarse fish may be removed from most stillwaters.
Eel stocks are dangerously low. To protect adult eel before they return to sea to spawn, we propose all rod-caught eel from any water are returned alive.
Twaite shad are likely to receive the same legal protection as Allis shad. To help protect both species, we propose that all rod-caught shad must be returned alive.

Re: Proposed byelaws to regulate fish removal by rod and line
Obviously if certain species are under threat, and "dangerously low" then the eels should certainly be returned alive.
All fish I catch get returned alive...with the exception of when Im using live baits for pike, It would be daft if they were to say NO fish could be killed or taken from the water,as anglers have been using "live" baits for hundreds of years, and is a technique that is very selective, I use one bait, to catch one pike, sometimes the baits stays on with the pike, and sometimes it comes off, if it comes off, I catch another bait, so nothing is killed or used unnecessarily.
But then with the debate comes the europeans, who catch and kill everything they catch (Ive seen it),I only use small fish as baits, but they, will literally take ANY size fish, and taking a big pike could easily wreck the food chain in a stretch of river.
This will be an interesting debate Stotty

This has been thrown around for a long while. For me it's clear. N0 coarse fish to be removed. Live baits restricted in number and cannot be transfered to another water, All Eels to be returned alive. For me theres no grey area. Trout taken as per fishery ruling. Also the same with Salmon. The issue with the two Shads!!! Who knows anyone who's ever seen one let alone caught one.

You make a good point by asking who'd want to take coarse fish away. Certainly not the majority of anglers in this country, it's not something thats gone on for very many years. As for restocking Tim, thats down to clubs and associations, and fishery owners. The EA will do some ,but how much remains to be seen.

Re: Proposed byelaws to regulate fish removal by rod and line
Mmmm interesing subject!! ok heres where i stand.... as a fly angler i have been brought up to take one fish from ariver and return the rest for next time, however i usually take no fish. The majority of guys taking 8 bag limits from fisheries are taking farmed fish so no case there either, coars fish removal is a tricky one imo as i dont particularly agree with the removal of fish from one place to another for use of livebaiting for the simple reasons of fish from one river living in a different eco system from fish from another river and so the risk of diseases spreading is much greater. In scotland i was always told when fishing rivers to kill any pike i caught again i didnt but that has been and still is a tradition amongst many river anglers especially the salmon guys. With species like roach rudd carp etc i cant see any reason for removing them other than live baiting or our eastern european friends eating them due to their ignorance of our fishing culture. The EA are doing what they feel is best and me coming from the only country in the british isles not to have a fishing licence i can see the difference that these guys make to your rivers and waterways in genral so i would have to sit firmly with the EA on this on.

Re: Proposed byelaws to regulate fish removal by rod and line
i thought you couldn't take fish from one water and use as live bait in another. and whats with the certain large still waters with no plans to do it to all still waters. prehaps it would be better to put byelaws in for only certain species to be taken from certain waters to limit fish removal and maybe have a register so as to monitor strechies of river and still waters that do stock fish for the table.
