The hybrids occur but do not produce functioning gametes. The classic example is the cross between female horse and male ass hens the mule.
Most hybrids are sterile, but there are many that are not! Mother natures play by her rules not by the rules set down by biologists.
The blood parrot cichlid is a man-made hybrid. The exact origins of the fish are unclear but it appears to be a cross between a South American cichlid, likely the severum (Heros severus) and a Central American cichlid, likely the midas cichlid (Amphilophus citrinellus) or the red devil (Amphilophus labiatus).

Blood parrots will attempt to breed in an aquarium and some pairs attempt to breed very frequently (every few weeks). What most people find is that a pair will court, clean a nest site and then lay eggs. However, the eggs don't hatch in many cases. The parents will continue to care for the eggs for several days until the eggs turn white with fungus and then the parents will likely eat the eggs.
from http://cichlidresearch.com/parrot.html Wink
Interestingly, recently more and more people report that their blood parrot cichlids are successfully breeding.

so yes the odd F1 could be a breeder but the bulk are not

Some of it is yes, the bit about the Parrots is from one of my fish keeping sites. The funny think is I know people that have had them breed in there tank that’s how I knew they could breed but the offspring always seem to come out green while the parents are red, so something strange there. There are a lot of cat fish Hybrids as well in the trade at the moment. These are known for there fast growth rate this is another trait of hybridisation.(hens the F1's grow quick) The term heterosis, also known as hybrid vigor
My Red Tail Catfish x Tiger Shovel Nose Hybrid Catfish both adults can get to 4 to 5 foot in the wild so potently you have a fish that could go 8 ft, and fast! It was made by man as a to be farmed for food. But ended up in the aquatic trade.

the fish was 3 inches long when bought and in 2 years was 2 foot

F1 hybrid is a term used in genetics and selective breeding it not just carp you have F1 corn etc etc while in plant and animal genetics those parents usually are two inbread lines so Mules are F1 hybrids as well
